Prospect (2018)
Excellent low budget Sci-fi
Really amazed at how good this was! I watched it on YouTube for free and thought it was on there because it was awful. Maybe my low expectations helped but I couldn't believe how much I really got sucked into this "alien" world. I gave it a 7 because at times the budget does show, the world is obviously a forest on earth and there's not really a lot of alien elements besides props made to look futuristic and language they use. I loved the script and world building though, the plot was simple and dumps us right into this established world and doesn't drown us in exposition. The relationship between Cee and Damon is complex and her later relationship with Ezra has it's own unique dynamic. The banter had me laughing out loud at times. The acting was AMAZING and by far the best part of the movie, though I did like costuming and sound (the soundtrack was great and really set the mood, I added 2 songs, Crying in the Storm and Launch to my spotify). Pedro and Sophie are fantastic at portraying these two, Pedro is a master actor but Sophie was only 17 at the time and really showed skills far beyond what you'd expect from a child actor. All in all I really think you should give it a chance. If it had a bigger budget to add more effects and better sets I think it would be an 8 or 9 because the script and actors really are that good.
Logan Lucky (2017)
Boring
I've seen this three times (against my will) and it was worse each time. Things I didn't notice on the previous watch made me more angry each time. Bad acting (accents), bad plot (stupid and contrived), and a bad ending. It's just not a good movie. If it was up to me, I wouldn't have finished it at all the first time. The all-star cast does not make up for the lackluster script they had to work with. There will be one or 2 scenes that make you chuckle but that's not enough to sit through the whole movie for. I didn't even like any of the characters you're supposed to be rooting for, they were so one dimensional that I didn't even care if they got the money or not. Worst of all, it's just boring.
Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles (2020)
Read the Description on Streaming Sites
"Follow celebrity chef Yotam Ottolenghi as he assembles a star-studded team of the world's most innovative pastry chefs to put on a Versailles-themed culinary gala at the Met in NYC" - This is the description on Hulu and Prime (I assume Netflix has the same one). This is not a documentary only about cakes, but also about the chefs behind the pastries and their modern spins on a historical profession. If you're looking for a documentary about cakes alone, then look elsewhere. If you're looking for a documentary about the thought process behind organizing a niche food gala, learning a little about the court of versailles, and learning about the people recruited this is for you.
The Omen (1976)
As unsettling as you remember
I first saw this years ago as a kid, it gave me nightmares for an entire week but it was worth it. It's a film that sticks with you and 16 years later I rewatched it as an adult only to find it as unsettling as I did back then. Really one of the masterpieces of horror, I've seen many movies that rely on cheap jumpscares and loud screams to make you jump. This brings a creeping and slow building terror as more is revealed through a series of killings and a prophecy of doom. Artful storytelling, acting, cinematography, and mystery build suspense that leads to one of the most surprising endings in any movie I can remember. (Spoiler: Damien is in fact the antichrist and after the death of his "parents" he winds up with their fortune and is seemingly adopted by his father's old college roommate the President of the United States of America, where he will build his unholy empire. This is retconned in the 2nd installment and he is now in the custody of his uncle, we won't speak of that here though lmao).
Córki dancingu (2015)
"The Little Mermaid" with murder and nudity
It's honestly good, the people that didn't like it take themselves too seriously. This isn't meant to be a movie that you sit down and analyze for serious plot, it's a fun and weird romp. For example, the leg transplant where the 2 girls are awake and there's minimal blood for the extensive surgery being done let you know it's not meant to be realistic. The soundtrack is probably the strongest parts and a lot of the songs are super catchy (I even added several to my Spotify 'liked' playlist). It's got a great soundtrack, good choreography (watch the scene with the policewoman if nothing else, it's tense!), spectacular 80's neon set design, really amazing tail props, a funky and crazy script. Don't miss it, honestly.
Xia nü (1971)
Slow in the first half, but redeems itself in the second.
There are scenes in the first part that seem to drag on far too long. Ouyang sneaking around, the whole deal with the portrait (that was never brought up again and seemed to serve no purpose to the central plot), when Ku Shen Chai is sneaking around the night Yang movies in, Yang seducing Ku Shen Chai (for seemingly no reason?). That part in particular came out of nowhere, there wasn't any real romantic tension between them before that and they didn't even have any scenes together. She only did that to give the Gu family an heir but she wasn't really that close to them, didn't know them that long, and she didn't seem to like Ku Shen Chai. The first fight scene didn't happen until an HOUR in, that's how slow the first half of this movie runs. From the bamboo fight to the end it's a 9/10 movie, the first hour is a 5/10. It could've been much shorter, I suspect the reason some scenes in the first are so drawn out and don't have any bearing on the plot is because the movie was originally shown in theatres in 2 parts, so both had to be long enough to sell tickets.
Dai si hing (2018)
Walmart GTO
Plot is all over the place, characters are boring and unlikeable, dialogue is clunky and cliche, acting is subpar. It's just not a good movie, the whole thing was very heavy-handed. I've seen and liked bad Donnie Yen movies before (Iceman for example) that still had good fight scenes and were endearing in their own silly ways. This is not one of them. If you're watching it because you're a hardcore Donnie fan like me you can suffer through it just to say you've seen every movie he's been in. But if you're watching this because you're looking for a good movie you won't find it here. The people giving it 10/10 are either paid bots or were part of the cast and crew lmao. There's no way anyone watched this and thought it was a masterpiece, it's not even a top 50 Donnie movie.
Blue Velvet (1986)
Sexual Exploitation For Shock Value
I hated it, I stuck through THAT scene because I thought maybe there was going to be more to the movie but there wasn't. It was just the sexual slavery of this one lady that was driving the entire plot, I couldn't even finish it because it kept looping back to the abuse of Dorothy. Even Jeffery gets in on it. The only person on Dorothy's side is also having violent sex with her (and just so happens to be the person she almost forced at knifepoint to recieve a blowjob). This is just the writer's barely disguised fetish, it could have been a 40 min porno instead. I gave it a 5 because there were plenty of parts that were fine on their own. The suspense of Jeffrey sneaking into Dorothy's apartment had me on the edge of my seat both times, the opening scene of the dad having a stroke draws you right in, and the relationship between Sandy and Jeffrey is pretty cute. The cinematography is the movie's strongest point, it's a visually interesting movie with how the sets are designed and how the scenes are filmed in them. But it's not enough to overcome the sexual abuse that pops up over and over to the point it's naustating. This is just a rape video from pornhb with a longer run time and a bigger budget. The only commentary that can be gleaned from this is that men are inherently violent regardless of their place in society, really what else was it trying to say.
