Abigail (2024)
Powerhouse Film / Perfect Cast
The story was better than I thought it was going to be without having seen the trailer mind you. The entire Cast did a fantastic job, Director & Producer nailed it. The comedy wasn't over-acted or forced and felt natural.
Alisha Weir "stole the show"; her professionalism & artistic abilities were a perfect example to even acting veterans, on how to become a character and deliver a masterful performance.
Vampire movies are like shark movies; they're difficult to do right especially when you go in new territory, yet this compared to many others is a superlative addition to vampiric cult followings.
Star Trek (1966)
Really? Just... NO!
I am a Trekkie. Watched TNG with my father as a child and decided to watch them all as an adult recently. I will review every series as I go and rate them independently from each other as well.
I cannot stay awake for this drole of a series; even after sleeping well and starting it after 3-4 hours from waking up, I'd fall asleep again. Despite that I dragged on through it.
The few qualities it does possess; including characters' traits, are not enough to sustain a quality product and/or artistic presentation. Much like Star Trek characters not being able to connect, empathize or sympathize with "old world characters". This show has too much outdated ideals about "social psychology/developmental psychopathology/anthropology-xenophobia/sexism/political influence & issues/propaganda/cold war attitudes & fears/cia influence/etc."
Rewatch it, stop drooling over your "idol main cast favorites" and look at women's reactions to situations... sometimes background men as well and you'll see exactly what I mean.
Everyone keeps defending this show by saying they started it all; no, USA announcing the public they want to land on the moon in 1961 is what influenced it all. It would have happened later on anyway under a different moniker and style perhaps; it was inevitable.
Sometimes trying to be the first instead of taking the time to understand your idea's is the worst decision.
There are many people from those times; "intellects, futurists, philosophers, scientists, ideals, outlooks, views, opinions, etc" that they could have drawn influence from to make a better creation. They had the know how and the resources to get that information even if the internet wasn't around so for the younger readers here, it might be difficult to understand (akin to trying to understand how humans could have built pyramids) - we knew how to get around before your ez info finds.
Interesting fact - naivete is more easily acquired when looking at the distant past.
If one is to choose to watch this show anyway; you have to go in thinking that this is the future of humanity from a Spaghetti Western universe. Then it will all make sense and the show won't be so bad.
I would like to add this mind you:
You have to literally understand the times... and that takes an extensive research, empathy, understanding, resourcefulness, inquiry and clarity to attain. Those who truly like or love Star Trek can understand and appreciate that process / modus operandi. In it's time it was forward thinking in some aspects; yet, couldn't be "what it could have been" and hope to survive as long as it did nor impact people the way it did.
It had to compete against already established shows to provide a new connection. Mutuality and reciprocity are very important factors in this case.
I believe the point of keeping "how society was at the time" into the characterization was to present the future as more sophisticated in many ways to shock society in a sort of social commentary. Posing the question/challenge to the silent generation, the baby boomers and early gen x - "is this what you want to become?" "Look at you all's foolishness; is change important now?"
With that lens of understanding could you not see the potential it presented? Regardless if I dislike it, I wasn't alive then so it wasn't for me - I wasn't it's audience.
Yu yu hakusho (2023)
Awesome for the Manga/Anime lovers - Bad for the Newcomers
The acting was great, fight scenes and choreography was mint and the toning down of comedy elements was a fresh take I didn't mind at all. The English Dub was trash, it came off as blatantly lackluster but it's ok because the Japanese acting was cranked to 11. Meaning they made it plausible instead of acting like anime characters. Subtitles is the way to go with this installment.
The reason I chose that title is because people who already read the complete manga or watched the entire anime won't mind all the missing elements - meanwhile newcomers won't realize how even greater this story is.
The difference?
ANIME:
Better character development, story has a better flow of reasoning behind their decision making and why they do what they do. Even their backgrounds are explored in better depth. Better drama, better comedy, better stakes, better thriller, etc, etc...
LIVE ACTION:
Missing lots of story beats/arc's that enrich the experience for the viewer. It would be really sad for people to disregard this story based on just this version alone. The original story isn't just about kicking ass, it has great touching moments which help you connect with them all - including the villains - trust me on that last statement, the writer of the original story made all his characters multilayered before Hollywood even dreamed of incorporating it in their medium.
Choose wisely!
Bodied (2017)
End of First Battle (5 minutes in) - Already Guessed It.
So I found this film while searching on this platform. Went in blind no prior search, inquiry or spoilers.
Turns out my "5 minutes in" assumptions were completely wrong. Was right about the main couple not lasting though.
Awesome movie. The rap battles are what you expect real life rap battles to be like. The story was great as well.
*Reading further is the assumptions I had:
The bleached blonde ( girlfriend or friend ) of protag expresses distaste for the sport. So why don't she leave? She keeps wanting explanations for everything and it causes her to whine & moan when she gets unbiased logical answers
She settled with protag... not for love or mutual respect of a human being companionship. Protag is being used until she finds potential mate which will begin with her cheating on him with a battle rapper.
His love for the sport will propel him from ( study or journalism ) to participating... his vast knowledge and intelligence will make him a star among peers.
Hooker will want him back... won't work - mostly because of the non obvious reason. Black rapper was using her as a piece... not because he's like that generally, but because her continuous hate for the craft will turn her into a "no-respect?-fine-you-a-side-piece-then--better-than-nothing" chick.
SO FAR, AT LEAST THE BATTLES ARE AWESOME COMPARED TO ANY OTHER FICTIONAL ITERATION / MEDIUM... OTHER THAN REAL LIFE BATTLES.
If I'm wrong about most of this - it will definitely score higher afterwards... on with the film.
Jones Plantation (2023)
A modern day allegorical masterpiece
A modern day allegorical masterpiece pervaded in metaphorical parables akin to an impactful anti-political hit song or an eye/mind opening documentary. If the audience decides to interpret it straightfowardly without dissecting & analyzing the narrative, they will be left with askew interpretations of the exposé. Alternatively if they descry the diegesis which exhibits perfect exemplum to any prospect; then it has fulfilled it's role, which is in service to the people. Genius incarnations are seldom bestowed upon our fickle existence which presents edification from a performance of artistic entertainment.
