Cunk on Earth (2022)
How gorgeous a funny bone feeling
I adore this show and am watching the original "Cunk on Britain" as I write this.
It's sublime to watch a series that stars a stoic imbecile posing as reference. It's easy to say you won't learn from Cunk but that's a phallacy as the character is insane, which heavily encourages viewers to browse Wikipedia in previously unexplored topics.
It is astounding to me that the professionals she interviews don't break more often (they probably did).
I won't say the humour is awkward because the Philomena Cunk character has a bit of awareness.
She is like if Mr. Bean spoke and was given well a mockumentary.
Sit back relax and enjoy!
You will probably finish this series in 3 days that's how funny it is.
Gary and His Demons (2018)
Be Still My Dark Little Heart
A wonderful, cynical, and metaphysical show!
I adore the character of Gary. I like how they handled his replacement Tucker. I adore the "Sailor Moon" sword reference. I really enjoy religious metaphysical nightmares too. Gary is like who "Constantine" would be in real life.
It has self loathing characters like a Dan Harmon vehicle, but virtually no meta style writing. Meaning a relatable antihero "Gary" without constant self and pop culture references.
It has an "Archer" catty workplace setting along with somewhat similar painterly backgrounds.
The animation of the characters is simple and based on long lines. Anytime a demon appears the style makes me feel like I'm watching an old "ebaum's world" flash animation. Yes that is a high compliment (think "Salad Fingers").
Parks and Recreation (2009)
Fabulous, heartwarming, overwhelming characters
I am wrapping up a binge watch of parks and rec. I watched the series originally many years ago.
The writing is cartoony and clever in the way that mockumentaries are. Watching this show is like watching season 8 of "The Simpsons". As a viewer you want to be or can relate to each character. Each story from each episode can be pretty much watched on its own. Any time there is a sequential storyline you can miss an episode without getting lost in the dynamics.
I don't think this show should be binged watched. The characters are in essence set in extremes based on the success of the early seasons.
Leslie becomes a toxic positive Godzilla. April becomes an old Wednesday Addams. Ben is grounded relatable. Tom is severely capitalist but he sounds like a chipmunk so it's cute? Ron went from my hero to some bizarre American joke. Andy is absolutely delayed in some capacity. Donna is pretty badass. Also why are they so abusive to Gary? Like if you see that bullying on other shows it's addressed as being bullying. Season 7 also has like 4 episodes that could constitute series ending episodes.
It's worth noting that parks and rec is a fremulon project. You like "Brooklyn 99?" You like "30 rock?" You will like parks and rec. It's a group of actors, producers, writers, etc who met through "SNL" channels.
Also April shouldn't have had a kid she said she didn't want to. I actually do not see the point of any of the characters having children. For each instance that a character has a baby we see the child as the focus of the episode they're born. The children's names are almost never referenced and the kids are scenery if they do appear (Anne's ultrasounds and Ron trying to impress Dianne notwithstanding).
Finally I think Ben Schwartz (John Ralphio) is sexy.
Palm Springs (2020)
Quantum RomCom
I had such a pleasant surprise with this movie. Time travel and physics meets an adorable couple.
You take an apathetic Sandberg character and a heartfelt lady and place them in accidental recklessness.
As an audience we get romance between quirky characters with almost a British sensibility.
We are also treated to a bizarre assassin side story.
Plenty of infidelity between guests.
And our leading lady pulls a Groundhog Day by heavily researching time travel. It's fantastic to see ambition in a lighthearted genre movie.
It's a romantic comedy with some salt on its rim, and a pickle back.
Crash Canyon (2011)
First of all NO Canadian knows this show
I am watching this show in Alberta Canada as we speak, though I am originally from Montreal.
Nothing about this show appears Canadian. The characters and setting and storylines have no Canadian bearing. The French Canadian character's accent is less convincing than Pepe Le Peu. The creator shouldn't have bothered to make him french Canadian.
I haven't laughed once. I haven't related to any of the characters or even enjoyed them. My partner and I agree the expression for this cartoon would be "Anaemic". Lacking any heart or balls.
If you want to watch funny Canadian content, by all means do. I recommend: Trailer Park Boys, Schits Creek, Kids in the Hall, and Kim's Convenience. Sorry none of these are animated. Please check out the original seasons of these shows as they are very popular and all have spin off material.
Cheers from a Canadian!
