Vivre sa vie (1962)
This film has everything!
11 August 2010
'Vivre sa vie' has been my favorite film for a long time and I do not feel the need to write a long review explaining why I like this film so much. Instead, I would just like to say that for me, there are two ways of watching it: with subtitles and without subtitles. As I do not speak French, I need to use subtitles to follow the story, but I also like to watch it without the subtitles. Mainly because of its brilliant cinematography. The camera angles, the sets, the use of music/sounds and Anna Karina's undeniable beauty make this film interesting to watch even without paying any attention to the story at all. That said, the story is not worth any less than the visual beauty of the film.

King Lear (1987)
6/10
Brilliant.
30 August 2008
This film is absolutely brilliant. Weird characters and the fact that there's NO-THING really going on made this film interesting for me. Other people might find this film pointless and totally boring, but for me it's a treasure. I don't know anything about Shakespeare's 'King Lear' so I can't say if this film has anything to do with the actual play at all. This is exactly the kind of film that makes you think. After seeing this film you wonder what did the director want to tell me? Because clearly this film is made to communicate with the audience, it's an expression of the film maker's ideas, views and emotions. Or in other words... IT'S ART! The same goes to another Godard film 'Numero Deux'.

Nowhere (1997)
8/10
you have to look deeper into the movie
25 August 2008
'Nowhere' is definitely among my favorite movies of all time with the likes of '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'Eraserhead', Pierrot le Fou' and others. It's sad to see that many people have misunderstood it, but then again, it's certainly not meant for everyone. People think it's thrash, just a fun flick like 'The Evil Dead' or the Troma movies. This is actually ART made to look like thrash, because it brings the audience closer to the characters. In my opinion the movie is totally impressive, both both visually and thematically. I love the dark and apocalyptic feel to it, this definitely looks like the generation that's gonna witness the end of everything. Araki is a MASTER and 'Nowhere' is his MASTERPIECE.

Not better than Tim Burton's Batman
20 August 2008
I went to see this movie with no expectations at all, because I'm not a fan of Batman and big budget Hollywood movies usually disappoint me. Although I think this movie is totally overrated, I liked the Joker character played by Heath Ledger and the story was OK too. The film itself was week in my opinion, it depended too much on the action and it didn't deserve to be titled "The Dark Knight" at all. Tim Burton's Batman was much more dark in my opinion and there was more of an artistic element to it while TDK was just an action movie. Despite of all, I completely understand why people like it. This movie has enough action and special effects to entertain most people and a pretty good story for an action movie, but I certainly think that it doesn't deserve to be third in IMDb Top250.

Saint Ange (2004)
10/10
Not bad at all.
19 January 2008
I was really shocked when I saw that the average rating for this film was only 4.5/10. I think people didn't like it because they didn't understand or even try to understand it, not because they're stupid or anything but because they're just not into films like this. Anyway,I think it's unfair to give it a 1/10 rating even if you didn't enjoy it at all, because the film is not badly done and it might mean a lot to people who like that kind of films. I personally enjoy watching films that don't tell the whole story and where you have to figure some parts out yourself. People like to be entertained and that's why Saint Ange is not for everyone. I've heard people say that it was not scary at all... IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE SCARY(at least not in the usual way), IT'S A PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER RATHER THAN A HORROR FILM, IT'S Supposed TO MAKE YOU THINK!!! I admit that Saint Ange is not the best film of it's kind, but it's a pretty good one. I just recently saw The Ring and I was very disappointed to see that it's IMDb rating was 7.3/10. The only good thing about The Ring was Naomi Watts. If anyone asked me to compare the two films, I'd say that Saint Ange is far more superior even though the IMDb ratings and comments say the exact opposite. The bald kids in Saint Ange were way more scarier than Samara in The Ring. Saint Ange is not perfect, but I'll give it a 10/10 only because of it's criminally low IMDb rating
