I'm giving 4 stars to this movie just because some of the acting in general was decent, specifically the performance of Ema, Dafoe and Ruffalo. The use of a language being learned was well done and to me the only thing that was comical and interesting as clumsy words not made to link with each other somehow made sense.
Throughout the movie I found myself hoping to see something more, some big mystery or plot twist that would leave me in awe, as the peculiar scenario was inviting to it, but the disgusting and uncomfortable parts coupled with yet another feminist movie dwindled the light at the end of the tunnel for me. Whoever wrote the script (I didn't bother to know who it was) should know that empowering women by giving them freedom to be whores is not something new, but I understand that many viewers will find this empowerment a phenomenal thing and not hesitate in giving a 10/10 rate in the end.
Implying that men are weak because they cannot make sex as many times in a row like women, that men only want to emprison their women, and doubling down on how any man is easily destroyed by jealousy is another boring point of the movie, but then again, it's a feminist movie made to sell in these times we're in.
Unfortunately this is what Hollywood has become, when actors accept making nude and sex scenes with children in the set (I read those parts were removed for the UK version because its illegal...), and hoping to being presented with an Oscar. Sometimes I wonder what do the parents and family of these actors think about when their girls are being exposed like this, as Emma Stone was. Do they all accept it, knowing that young actors like her are seen as models for even younger generations to follow and copy? Do they think if that's ok or not? Is it moral for them? Well, it's Hollywood world so maybe not, none of them think about it, just in the money. Money in favor of sexual exploitation will always be together till the end of days. This is definitely not a movie to go out and see it in the theaters with your family, or at least if there's some reasoning in your family.
I'm sure this movie will win Oscars for obvious reasons... but as for me I will not recommend this movie to anyone, in fact I will tell people to not waste their time.
