Saltburn (2023)
The message is... there's none.
The first 30 minutes were promising. Everything after is a hot pot of messy fabricated events. I wanted to write a review, but honestly there isn't much to talk about here.
The lead is a greedy boy who wants wealth, no motivation, no justification, no human complexity, no ramification. He's a boy who wants the shiny stuff (although he's not poor). He goes in, kills everyone and gets it all for himself in a not so cunning manners.
A character who acts without context or motivation is not compelling. Oliver is inconsistent in his behaviour, but that's not the issue, Oliver doesn't have a set of moral codes, a compass that we get familiar with. His behaviour shocks, but doesn't teach or provide a picture of how he is, because he's random.
No matter how great the style and the image is, the reliance on shock-value approach made the film ever so upsetting.
I'd say it's an Aliexpress knockoff of Shutter Island or The Prestige.
