Cam (2018)
8/10
Required some thought but I actually liked it.

Warning: Spoilers
I found it interesting that she would fight to stay in such a job even if it meant harming herself to do it. It's like she had this power over men that paid well and she never even considered giving it up to do something else. This was her world and she didn't want to locked out of it, even if it was not approved by others, like her mother's neighbors. Even if she could never bring herself to tell her mother what she was did for a living, it was something she was good at and she had the drive to make it a success.

The director did a good job as the characters were stereotypes yet engaging on some levels. The acting was well done and it was interesting to see the inside world of cam girls and the suggestion of the slippery slope it could put a person on as it constantly asked the question, what would you do to be number one, and would you do it even if it meant starting over at the bottom of the pile.

I had no problem with Lola's evil twin as she was not meant to be the focus of this story. The point was how far would you go to be number one?

The only part I had problems with, was the evil twin teaming up with a second girl. She needed to have a reason to meet up with one of her whales brought on by the continued escalation of the twins sexual exploits. I'll chalk that up to bad editing as the message there was in better understanding the types of men she dealt with.

Was the twin an A.I. program created by some hacker to do identity theft on girls in order to take over other's income sources and make the hacker rich? This would explain the wording being used by the doppelganger being sourced from a lot of Lola's old videos. Anyways... explaining the source of the twin would have made it a much longer movie. But as I said earlier, the movie wasn't concerned about who was doing this to her but squarely focused on how she reacted to it, which appeared to be the whole point of this movie.

Hold the Dark (2018)
3/10
Please re-edit this movie.

All the parts are there, good acting, engaging characters, great nature scenes, and a great story that ended up being a little too cryptic. The movie held my attention because I didn't want to miss anything that would confirm what I thought the film would be about. But it never did. My suspicions is that the answers were left on the cutting room floor when the film was edited.

This feels like one of those movies that you have to read the book first to understand what's going on or at least have someone who has read the book sitting next to you to explain what was going on and what all those little details meant.
