Ramsey: The Vandy Case (2021)
Intriguing Crime Drama
This is an indie crime drama that revolves around the murder of a female cop. Private investigator Ramsey is tasked by the victim's sister to help solve the murder. Ramsey, played by Jim Thalman, is a very compelling and likable character. While this is a slow burn film and some scenes could be tighter, the story is very entertaining and engaging. It has a very clever twist and also explores interesting relevant topics that many crime films don't. If you enjoy crime stories as much as I do, you should definitively give this movie a chance. Filmmaker Tom Ryan does a good job at keeping you guessing until the very end!
AVA: A Twist in the Road (2021)
A Powerful Drama About Starting Over
I was very impressed by this indie drama and by the wonderful performance of Catherane Skillen. The film very effectively tells the story of Ava, a woman who unexpectedly is forced to rebuild her life at a later stage in her life. I love how this film fights ageism and shows you that no matter where you are in your life, it is never too late to change your ways and start over. I was very moved and engaged throughout Ava's journey, even when it seemed hard to relate to her at the beginning, she's a fully fleshed character who quickly wins you over and makes you root for her. It is also incredibly refreshing to see 50 plus women in leading roles and I truly wish there were more films like this.
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
An Indie Gem
I only recently heard about this film and I am so glad I gave it a chance! I generally love romantic movies and I was completely taken by this intimate and unusual love story. I love how real and complex the characters are, and while you may have never experienced what they go through (which can be pretty intense at times), you can relate to their feelings and emotions. I really felt for them both. At times hilarious and at times heartbreaking, this is a very solid indie film that you will love if you are into romantic comedies. I also really appreciated the filmmaking and how close it makes you feel to the characters.
