The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Victorian style horror, Modern Opulence!!!
Anyone remember HBO's Penny-dreadful? This body of work is similar to the style of a Penny dreadful told within the opulence of being mega rich in the Twenty-First century. Mike Flanagan has an uncanny ability to extract chemistry from his actors telling their stories individually and clearly while keeping the overall " what the hell is going on" screaming in the back of your mind. This is not as petrifying as "Hill House" but there are more than a few jump scares in there to keep you on your toes ( especially if you are watching with surround sound). Flanagan continues to give me additional reasons to love Halloween season!!
Fear the Night (2023)
Other than Maggie Q.... A dumpsterfire
If you enjoyed " You're Next" this movie will unfortunately leave a bitter taste in your mouth. I cant say that i disliked the plot of this movie and really had high hopes for it given Maggie Q as the lead. However the acting by the other ladies was lack luster and unbelievable and add this alongside a really poorly written script " voila", you get this . In this day and age who goes anywhere( worse yet in the middle of nowhere) knowing that communication signals are poor/none existent? Not even wifi? Come on! I watched in its entirety purely for Maggie Q and a curiosity ( hope) for at-least a creative ending.
