Odd Thomas (2013)
Excellent....just excellent
I didn't even know this was a book adapted to film. Like many Im sure the books are excellent as well but I really enjoyed this movie. The acting and directing was incredible. The graphics were well done and I was surprised for a young adult book, it was rather dark. Reminds me of the "The Last Apprentice" books. The premise is excellent and very entertaining. Im actually surprised this isn't more highly rated. It jumps you right into the movie. Grabs you right from the beginning and really never stops moving forward with the story. I really hope they come out with another one.
If your looking for a dark entertaining supernatural flick....this is your movie.
R.I.P.D. (2013)
They "Billy Goated Me!"....
I watched this cause I thought the idea was brilliant, although a copy of MIB. I will say they did try to separate themselves in regards to MIB but perhaps that was a bad thing????.........
First off its bad when Bacon, Daniels and Reynolds cant safe a movie for the life of it. Seriously. The writing was so bad. It was not the plot but the way they moved about it.
Long, drawn out only to explain the story line ( did it really have to get this in-depth? FOLLOW MIB!!!) What I liked!!!! Well the acting. It was fun. That's.......pretty much it. No one can knock the acting. The CGI, been done. The plot, been done. Soooo....my PROS are I liked the main characters, their acting and what they TRIED to do with it?!?!!? They took amazing actors, took an amazing (although stolen) plot and just destroyed it with long horrid storyline writing. Think about MIB. The plot was explosive, quick on the uptake and then progressive. No.....not with this. Fail.
BTW they set it up for a sequel....Who cares.....
The Man with the Iron Fists (2012)
Kung-Fu throwback via Manga Style
I have read a lot of reviews but I don't know why it received so many bad ones. First of all Quentin didn't have anything to do with this other and producing. He didn't write it or direct it. Moving on.
The movie was very much like a modern Kung-Fu movie. The costumes and colors were beautiful. Absolutely stunning in parts. The action was fun, although hokey at times, but like many based on myth and a modern take on classic films. Very much to the tone of Detective Dee, Hero and even Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Now this is only in action. Nothing more.
The story was your average story. Nothing new on that. People wanting to kill each other for various reasons. Revenge, hatred and sex. All your typical themes. The characters were not developed very well and I think that was a big misfortune. Russel Crowe, an ancillary character, was the best actor in the film. Hes a dick but no surprise there. RZA's acting was pitiful. Really just bad. He seemed to be coming into his own toward the climax and still was just terrible.
OK so after everything I stated why 7 stars.....cause it was a throwback. It was a throwback to something Wu-Tang, specifically RZA (look at the new vids of Wu-Tang) has always admired and used as a theme in their music and videos. A lot of the action, the old school references to costumes, typical hierarchy, kung-fu power stand offs in the old action films.....etc. The biggest complaint I heard was the split screens. This is why I referenced the Manga. Manga is just like that. I do agree it threw the viewer off and was unnecessary but that was the reference. He tried to mix all the genres of Kung-fu with his own story and honestly, it was entertaining.
If your looking for a fun kung-fu movie that doesn't take itself to seriously in the plot department, you will have a fun watch. If your looking for character development, solid plot and more realistic action, watch Zatoichi or IP man.
V/H/S (2012)
Good Horror Fun
Breakdown: Basically this movie is a series of hand cammed individual stories. It for me is like Trick or Treat (not as good though) and reminiscent of Tales from the Darkside. Kind of like those scary short story books you could get through the scholastic book club. I forgot the name of them. Not goosebumps but the more twisted ones that were all short stories.
Some of the stories have been done before but they did put interesting twists on them. There was a lot of unique things in the movie as well and not just some of the stories. I found some of the characters movements and acting to be truly unique to the horror genre. You will have to see what I mean when you watch it.
I wouldn't have paid money in the theater to see this but it is def worth a rent. Would be a lot of fun with a bunch of friends on Halloween. Also, its about 2 hours long so you get a bang for your buck.
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)
What a Self Indulgent POS Tom Six is.
K first off, I thought the first one, all though poorly filmed and honestly directed, was interesting. I thought the premise was unique and different.
This one though, what a cop out. First it takes place in the UK. The only people allowed to ascertain a firearm are certain sects of the police and the other authoritative figures of the upper echelon. This parking lot attendant has a firearm, all the videos are on closed circuit which goes right to the company and monitored by the UK gov.
The main character alone is physically incapable of what he was doing anyway. Honestly. There is no way physically he could have performed 80% of what he did.
Also, the worst part and why I hate Tom Six for all of his self indulgence, he didn't even come up with a new storyline. Its all a rehash. Its an homage to his original. What kind of unimaginative garbage is that.
This is just a waste of time to be perfectly honest. It is not any more grotesque than the original and IMO just simply unimaginative.
Long story short, Tom Six has an ego the size of Kim Jong Ill and a lot less entertaining.
Take Me Home Tonight (2011)
A new feel good movie.
I really enjoyed this movie.
First Im a huge fan of Topher Grace since That 70s Show and In Good Company. (BTW In Good Company). He gives an excellent performance and along with the rest of the quality cast, the acting is just incredible.
Also Im not going to get into the movie itself but its your classic feel good movie similarly to Breakfast Club, 16 Candles etc.
If I had to describe it its Superbad but a lot more mature and tactful. It deals with a situation all of us have had. We all get to a point and go wtf am I going to do with my life. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Just focus on good friends, good family and the sheer enjoyment of life.
Enjoy the watch.
Srpski film (2010)
I mean this seriously......Don't let Curiosity get the better of you.
So I heard that the Human Centipede 2 is coming out and watched the stupid egotistical bastard give his stupid speech in the trailer. In the comments someone said something about a Serbian film I thought hey maybe they have some cool horror movies. I used google find out its an actual title. I watch the trailer and think wth. Cant be anymore messed up sexually than a few others I have seen.
I was way way wrong. I actually believe that people who rated this highly should be investigated and probably in a ward. This movie is that F*UCKED up.
I don't recommend this to anyone and this should never have been made. Please do not watch this cause it will haunt you.
You have been warned.
The Mechanic (2011)
Big Fan and Ill tell you why
I rated this pretty high and Im sure a lot of people don't feel its justified considering the original was so incredible but.......the chemistry between Jason and Ben was excellent. Im becoming a big fan of Ben Foster as an action star and with the two of them it was exciting to watch the action sequences. The choreography was awesome and the blood splatter, bullet wounds, looked very good on camera.
The storyline and some other parts were average at best but I think overall with the quality of the acting and the action it was worth the watch.
I look forward to big (bigger) things from Ben Foster.......hopefully.
Small Town Gay Bar (2006)
Very MIxed Feelings about this.
I ended up watching this movie cause I saw that View Askew was a producer of this. I love Kevin Smith and I know he had mentioned that his brother was gay. I have a gay sister so I figured this would be a fun enlightening movie about gays being prosecuted in the bible belt.....and now Im not so sure these people didn't do it to themselves. Let me explain.
I don't want to give away a lot of this movie but Ill use a general basis for explaining this. Everyone knows that people hook up and there are crazy bad apples no matter what race, sexual orientation religion etc however......every single bar they talk about, except for the first one......is insane. I don't mean like ha ha people get naked when they are drunk or hook up in the parking lot occasionally......I mean this is a very common activity at the bars they talk about. I have done my fair share of partying and have had my fair share of "coke and hooker" nights. (Not really but you understand) but the stories at these gay bars are flat out batsh*t insane. The things they talk about don't even happen in filthy rat ass strip clubs. No lie. OK so how does this translate as a positive thing.
To be perfectly honest, it doesn't for me. To be perfectly frank, if this stuff happened in general straight or whatever, most normal people would not condone it at all. Personally, not being gay but, I feel that it presents them somewhat in a very dishonorable fashion and rather poorly. They try to use the bible belt lunatic radical Christians persecuting them as the focus of these poor folks but when the movie talks about all the crazy things that happen here....I cant blame them. It doesn't make them look responsible.
Again, obviously there are responsible people everywhere and there has been more than enough persecution amongst the gay population in the bible belt to address a ton of these but why focus on these insane clubs that are totally irresponsible in an attempt to make them look better than the people trying to ban them and intimidate these people?
If, in fact, ALL gay bars are like this, then F'ing hell there is something wrong with you GAYS!, but we know thats not the case. So does this get a solid point across without conflicting.....sadly no.
Sorry Kevin but b*tchslap Ingram.
Get Him to the Greek (2010)
Horrible Expectations.....Pleasantly Surprised. Don't overlook!
I had no hopes for this movie at all. Russel Brand and the fat cat from Superbad. Hoarry any other horrid combo at a point in their careers where they had already overstayed their welcome.
Not so! I was very surprised with the depth, acting and real life, easily relatable situations. Russel Brand and "meatball" gave an excellent performance and the storyline was solid. Puffys appearance was a lot of fun and well done. It had a very "feel good ending" while being energetic at the same time.
I don't want to write spoilers or give away jokes or anything but this movie is just excellent to watch with friends or a date or just by yourself. You will not be disappointed.
Män som hatar kvinnor (2009)
One of the best in awhile........
I had no idea what to expect with this movie but after seeing something on MSN.com about people screwed over by the globes I figured Id give it a whirl.
I ended up getting a Dubbed version and I know a lot can be lost in translation that way but I loved it. It definitely has a "girl power" feel to it but it is very well done. The acting is excellent the storyline is excellent and its well written.
One thing I really loved was its not your typical "American" , which its not, suspense/detective movie. A lot of these are clues and discoveries that come out of nowhere and don't make a lot of sense. This movie I found was very realistic in the way it was written and was done the way real people would do it. It didn't have that feeling of disconnection with the characters being so much more intelligent and magical when it came to the clues.
Anyway I enjoyed it so much Im going to give the other movies a shot with the same female character.
I highly recommend this but please be aware, there is A lot of "violation" if you will. Not for sensitive viewers.
Kudos.
The Green Hornet (2011)
Seth Rogen and Jay Chou........really?
This movie was totally ruined by Seth Rogen. He should never have been considered for this part at all and its just more proof Hollywood thinks any trendy Jew can fill a Hollywood role. Had they written this alittle darker with a different actor this might have worked. I think they were going for an Iron Man feel with the likes of Robert Downing but Seth Rogen cant compete with him even on his best day.
The action was fun and Jay is a talented martial artist but so stiff and robot like.
The best performance was given my James Franco, who I hate in general, and the guy from Inglorious Basterds in the very beginning of the film. Don't look for much more after that in terms of quality acting.
Seth Rogen needs to retire for awhile and stay out of the spotlight. He destroyed a legend of a series.
Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
If you liked the first one.....leave it at that.
This movie was just horrible. There was one part where I jumped and that was it. This movie tries to develop a story but never finishes and its like they forgot they even tried. Nothing get answered and its just the ramblings of a teenage girl.
This movie is like a copy and paste of the original with worse camera footage. The big anti-climatic "climax" was just that......anti climatic and where you would have wanted to see better footage they didn't.
The ending was just awful. Seems like they either ran out of money, film or just wrote themselves into a corner cause there just wasn't enough substance to create a solid ending.
Don't waste your time. Worthless.
Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Awesome and what halloween movies should be....
For me halloween isn't only scary but silly as well. Thats what this movie was to me. They mixed in a quality intertwining story with some funny goofy horror elements. The burlap bag kid was classic and Ill always remember him cause it was just so unique. They could also move onto a sequel as well cause they left a lot of the characters there to move forward. I thought it was a lot of fun to watch and enjoyed the hour and a half of watch time. Don't expect great acting or in-depth story but if your looking for a fun group movie or find yourself with sometime to kill and in the mood for some freaky stuff. Give it a whirl.
Antichrist (2009)
Nothing redeeming about this movie at all!!!
I have never posted here and I never wanted too cause I felt everyone enjoys different things so to put something negative may only encourage people to never watch a movie they would of otherwise enjoyed.
This movie is absolutely complete garbage. First just so everyone knows this movie isn't art. Its some twisted mans wet dream and interpretation of a psychotic ex-girlfriend or something. Then he tries to add in "evil" elements in it to enhance the story. Its so retarded on so many levels I think I watched it just to see it to the end to say that I did in fact watch it and it was a complete waste of time.
Long story short, which most people whose comments I read missed. This has nothing to do with the guy analyzing his wife. Hes the victim throughout the whole movie and basically hes a silent abuser and she secretly enjoys it. Except shes completely insane and is evil herself.....whoopy doo.
OK so here it is. Picture a Japanese film noir(the worst one you have ever seen) meets ninth gate without the interesting parts with some cinematic scenes that look as if they stole it straight out of Dantes Inferno, oh and just for fun with the animals you could say a touch of the golden compass.....even though I couldn't give this a zero a 1 was fair cause of the Dante scenes.
The House of the Devil (2009)
Again on the streak of bad movies
Interesting that it was based on a real story but horribly horribly boring except for the first maybe 20 minutes and the end. I ended up watching this movie and it moved very slow and the way it was done seemed like it was a rob zombie movie at first. So after the first 15 minutes I skipped through the boring parts cause it was just so droll.....I ended up skipping roughly an hour of the movie. The last 10 15 minutes is where all the action happened. So if you want to know what happens and save yourself almost 2 hours just do what I did and then maybe you'll fall into the topic of satanic cults one day and you'll have something to add to the conversation. Seriously...... Don't waste your time.
