Scream (1996)
scream review
The killer Ghostface is terrorizing a small town, killing off the people who dare break the 'rules' of horror movies. His victims are mostly teenagers, but he has his eyes set on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell.) Everyone is watching.
Scream was released in December of 1996, before many people had seen it they were calling it DOA. It was during a time were slasher films where starting to die, and only seeing the light of a VHS release. Scream came out and single handily saved horror. Become the 16th highest grossing film of 1996 making over a 100 million at the box office, to mainly positive reviews. It made Neve Campbell a household name and showed the world that Wes Craven still is and always well be the master of horror. Scream blew the doors back open to slasher films and paved the way for the likes of I know what you did last summer, Urban Legends and many many more.
Scream has one the best and most shocking openings ever. For 15 minutes we sit on the edge of our seats as we watch a young Casey being harassed as Ghostface keeps calling her on the phone. All he wants to do is play a game, sounds simple enough. Only he is outside her window watching her, and his game is horror movie trivia, a game that always proves to be deadly. None of the viewers seen this opening happening, some of us couldn't believe it was happening. It sets the tone for the whole movie and makes us wonder if they open like this, then wheres the ride going from here? Well my friend put your belt on nice and tight because this ride does not let up.
We meet our main girl Sidney Prescott. We find out that her mother was killed just a year before. The man who did it in jail. When Ghostface puts his sights on her she is quick to learn that running out the front door doesn't always work. On top of this Sidney has to put up news reporter Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox.) Who wrote the book about the murder of Sidney's mother. Gail seems to put Sidney though more hell than Ghostface, but she well get whats coming to her. Sidney's boyfriend Billy don't really seem to understand her drama filled life to make matters worse. Of course we also have the hot blonde played by Rose Mcgowan, your film geek played by Jamie Kennedy, and you stupid cop played by David Arquette. Only they are all very real in depth people.
Scream puts every horror rule ever made in your face and then breaks them. It's a tongue and cheek horror film with some laughs but a hell of lot more scary's and blood. The most clearly written teen horror, its packed with lots of turns and drama. Wes Craven is a great story teller with how he tells the camera move, It is so slow well pasted that its very creepy. You just sit back and watch it unfold. There is lots of conversations that just make your blood flow cold, Wes makes this very intense by his use of close ups on the speakers face I found myself holding my breath at times. The last 20 minutes of this movie is filled with great surprise. You wont see any of this coming I promise you that.
Scream is a very important film to horror, and the history of horror, and it is one of my favourite films. It paved the way for so many. If you have not seen this film you really should. It well not let you down.
The Bad Seed (1956)
very bad seed
After a 8 year old boy's drowning a mother starts to question her perfect little girls innocents.
The bad Seed is a film way, way ahead if its time. So ahead of its time that it still fits in with films of 2013. It has aged so beautiful like Elvira, you'll have a hard time telling it was a 1956 movie. The only thing giving it away is that it is black and white, but even so I think if this movie was made today it should be done in B&W. B&W add's so much to this film it gives it so much charm and makes the film so real because it is such a 'dark' film that being in B&W it really enhance that.
The Acting in this film is some of the best I have seen Nancy Kelly gives one hell of a performance along with Patty McCormack who were both nominated for an Oscar along with Eileen Heckart for their acting. Nancy plays Christine Penmark the mother of Rhoda Pennmark played by Patty. The two together was so great at times I had forgotten that they were acting and not really mother and child, they made me forget I was watching a movie at times. They were so real I truly feel they were robbed out of the Oscar. The acting in Bad Seed is so memorable it stays with you for a long time. Nancy plays the tormented mother so good she is very haunting. Patty plays an emotionless perfect child so well she is truly a frightening kid, I would never wanna meet her. . Eileen Heckart plays Hortense Daigle the mother of the boy who was killed she becomes the towns drunk and she plays it so well you well forget that she is acting sober even her speech is very sloppy. Henry Jones who plays Leroy needs a shout out he was definitely great to watch.
The film was also up for best cinematography giving it a total of four Academy Award nominations. I do agree the camera work in this film was great there was some dolly's shots and even a jib shot I know these kind of shots are nothing new but for some reason I just like to see them in older films. I also liked how most everything on screen was always in focus I always love that. What makes this movie complete and makes it so ahead of its time is its dialogue, the dialogue is easy to listen to they use simple words and don't try so hard to be so proper. They even toss in a few slang words like 'holler.' The dialogue is definitely not 1950's its very true and real.
I really did enjoy this film. Its a easy and awesome watch. It is along the lines of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and Rosemary's baby. If you are in the mood for a really good old B&W film look no more The Bad Seed is the film for you. It is well written and well acted its a master piece I hope it is not soon forgotten
Evil Dead (2013)
Great Time
I think everyone is forgetting that Sam Raimi was the producer of this film! As in HE was the BOSS of the film! As in he was a part of the film making.
Now that I said that. This film was a great re-make. I admit that at first the acting was kind of bugging me, but once the film started It got very enjoyable. By the end of the film I was smiling and loving everything I was seeing, and with little CGI made it 10 times better.
Looking back on the film I now see that the acting was very strong, and an again a great re-telling. It was a bloody good time one of the best horror films to come out this year so far. You just need to sit back and really have a fun time with this film! A lot of great things happen in this film and it left me with wanting to see it again and again.
I would also like to point out there was some very, very strong film making happening here, the people behind the camera really knew what they were doing.
I think a lot of people well have fun with this film. Horror fans are going to love it. Fan boys need to stop being so up-tight and realize that Sam Raimi had his hand in this film and he told us what he was going to be doing with the film, and he didn't hold back on us! There was a lot of parts where Sam Raimi's style popped out at us.
The Woods Have Eyes (2007)
The woods have eyes
The movie was not the best, but at the same time I did enjoy it, its nothing big and it won't ever win any awards. But I still think it was good, they could have done with a better ending! but I would tell you only to rent if you know what you are getting yourself into, if you like low budget slasher independent films then I say you watch this. Now they said it was based on true events, I do not know how true that is, because it just seemed like the story has been done before. The acting is not to bad, some of the cast could have done better. But like I said I did enjoy the movie, maybe even enough to watch it again. All I'm saying is that there are better movies out there but there is also worse ones for sure. But if you do enjoy film, I think you should watch this.
