Saltburn (2023)
Stylish and Entertaining But...
Ok the film is stylish and entertaining despite the final act dipping then picking up again for the ending. Great for a kickback viewing this holiday season but after all is said and done half way through the film I felt something was missing. If you're going to make satire and social commentary by all means go for it without being preachy. This film tries to push the envelope for the genre but falls short. It's very stylish with standout performances by Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Richard E. Grant, and Rosamund Pike. Theres a stellar supporting cast including Carey Mulligan but I can't help by shake the feeling and impression that the story fell short of really being good. There are moments of brilliance but short lived and while I enjoy a fun rollercoaster ride this was one ride I couldn't wait to get off. There's a few surprises at the end and Barry's character keeps revealing his psychopathic behavior in that dark comedic way. The grave scene is something to behold.
Boy Culture: Generation X (2021)
Lacks the Charm and Storytelling of the Original Movie
It was great getting to peak in on what the characters X and his now ex-boyfriend Andrew are doing. They have moved to Los Angeles and apparently left Joey behind in Seattle. X and Andrew despite breaking up are still living together for financial reasons. X returns to making money as a sex worker but as expected quickly finds out the game has changed. There are a bunch of hysterical scenes but the flick tv series falls short of the originals charms and sexiness. Not a shocker since rarely does a sequel or revisiting film tv series truly wet our appetites. At one point it all seems a bit rushed and short and trust me I get budget and time restraints but why disappoint the audience. Theres a poignant moment when X realizes he still loves and needs Andrew and he let his prickly ways get in the way of true happiness something he did in the original movie. It's worth a watch if you loved the original film.
Good Enough: A Modern Musical (2023)
This is Bad Enough
Regular themes mixed with modern day sensibilities that is horrible. It's like watching paint dry. I had no empathy for the characters and couldn't wait for this fiasco to be over. The musical numbers were not even on par with the best high school performances I've witnessed. When it was over I kept saying that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. This story could of been told in half the time. It just seemed that the director rushed the shoot and no one bothered to push the actors to deliver honest emotional performances. It was amateurish at best. As I watched the musical numbers I kept thinking this can't be choreographed only to watch the end credits to realize it was to my dismay. I hope the writer, producer, and director keep trying to develop but this is just plain awful.
