Come on ....
30 January 2023
That's 10 minutes I won't get back. I was going to give it five stars for the effort, but the only 'effort' was the beautiful location and 'inspired cinematography'. All the stuff that the other review put about it being a powerful story about lonliness and truth makes me assume that the other reviewer is somehow involved with the film or is related to someone who is. To me the story was about a crabby old man who has to be increidbly lonely who has a chance to maybe be less lonely but he blows it in 10 minutes by being a mean old bastard. Is that what is meant by powerful story of love and truth?

second review (haha)
26 November 2022
I've only seen two episodes, but I really like this show!

I've always been a Kamal Nanjiani fan. I've seen all of his comedy specials and IMO, he's a riot. - and apparently a very good dramatic actor. The other actors are great as well - including the always reliable Juliette Lewis.

But the kicker is, it's not just about male dancers. It's a really interesting movie about business, creativity and applying yourself until you are successful. I think it's along the lines of Vinyl and Duce (also set in late 70's and early 80's) - but this is more upbeat. I hate that Hulu and Apple TV only give you one show a week - I'm a binge-type girl - but I am really looking forward to the next episode.

Swing & a miss & a hit
28 May 2022
OK - you gotta watch it all the way to the end. Two thirds of the way through I was ready to give it a 3 - and I'm someone who really digs Donald Glover and want to give all his stuff a chance. (love the whole cast, actually).

Anyway, I felt like there was no flow - and I still think some of the absurdity was distracting - but it all comes together at the end and adds to the complexity of the network around Earn & PaperBoi.

Nice movie; faithful to the book
9 January 2022
I read this book years ago and really liked it, and the movie version is a was very well done. I know Roger Ebert said there was nothing new and it wasn't really 'feel good', but I beg to differ. I thought it was the perfect blend of poignant/funny so that it pulls of the coming-of-age thing without being sappy. Ben Affleck is great. If you don't like him in this, you don't like Ben Affleck. Both actors who play J. R. Moehringer are excellent. Definintely worth seeing.

If you're looking for something depressing ....
1 January 2022
I can't fault the acting, but the story was weird and sad and just sort of going nowhere. Also, shot in black and white. All I'm saying is make sure you are in the mood for this. It wasn't a feel-good movie to me.

YES, REALLY
7 May 2021
Each episode is like a puzzle piece and when the puzzle is put together you see the layers of this 'dysfunctional' group and their efforts to evolve. Believe it or not, some men are still blockheads, and say and do stupid, insenstive things. We've all been having a laugh at those who ask for sensitivity as in conflates into political correctness, but when it's YOUR child, maybe it's ok to try to see things from another point of view. Well done.

WHY?
17 April 2021
Too soon. We are still in the middle of the covid-19 pandemic and someone thought it was a good idea to make a movie about it that's not a documentary?? The very idea of it is in poor taste.

Worked for me
15 April 2021
This movie hooked me from the start with a couple that had great chemistry and snappy dialogue. I was invested in them immediately. Then the movie kicks you in the gut with a never-ending nightmare, and yet somehow has a hopeful feel as well. I liked it a lot! I started out watching/listening to the movie, and ending up feeling it.

Nice looking couple, good dialogue, cinematically pleasing. It's well-paced, has a strong and interesting POV about a serious subject with an underlying unifying message. Don't know what else to say without spoilers. Worked for me. I think it's worth 30-minutes of everyone's time to see if you can understand what the writer and director are saying.

WELL DONE
21 July 2019
Great story-line, great casting, great acting, and hello - awesome cinematography. I'm sure I noticed intentional bokeh effect in several scenes. But the best part was Marc Maron scored the movie. He's REALLY good.

"Leonard Skinner"

Right now I'm thinking that this is the best documentary that I've ever seen. Definitely the best Music Documentary, and I've seen a lot of those. My husband and I watched all the way to the end and then pressed replay to rewatch right away. I've never done that with a movie before! I helps that we love the band, but you will love this movie even if you just love music documentaries. Or really interesting stories told very, very well.

Crazy Heart (2009)

Nothing that hasn't been done (better) before
15 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
So far, only two other IMDb users (Casablanca and M2b) saw the same movie I saw when we went to see Crazy Heart. I was tricked into seeing the movie by falling for the Oscar buzz surrounding Jeff Bridges, who plays Bad Blake. And even though we all knew this was going to be The Wrestler with music, my friends and I went to see what the critics promised: Jeff Bridges transcend an obviously formulaic plot with an amazing performance. Bridges performance was spot on as a disgusting, burnt out, drunkard, who, like Randy 'The Ram' Robinson has to settle for humiliating gigs in no-name towns, just to keep himself in booze and cigarettes. Good performance. Not amazing. But the rest of the movie goes nowhere and none of us could buy the romance between "Bad" and Jean, played by Maggie Gyllenhal. Maggie's never looked better, but instead of channeling Marisa Tomei and looking a little down and out or rough around the edges, we are supposed to believe that this perky single mom with an adorable son and neat-as-a-pin house would fall in love with an overweight, sloppy drunk who drinks 'till he pukes, chain smokes and spends his days watching porn. No back story on Jean and why she would be so vulnerable that she'd fall in love with him during an interview.... Mommy was a country music groupie with a crush on "Bad"? .... Daddy was an alcoholic who ran off on her? .....all we know is that she's made "bad choices". Robert Duval plays himself, basically. The character actors are believable, but not engaging. The one subtle but surprising performance was turned in by Colin Farrell who impresses me more each time I see him. I know I ask a lot of my $12 movie ticket. Next time I'll trust my instincts.
