Rojst (2018)
Poor representation of women
I was literally gritting my teeth while watching the first episode, so bad it was. It has such disrespectful and bad representation of women that it becomes almost comical. Women are either:
- Looking like dead dolls, either killed or on a window display
- Beautiful vamp wants to have sex with an old man
- Prostitutes
- Porn movie star
- Servant workers such as secretaries and waitresses
- Wife who pays attention only to the wrinkled shirt of a man (because, of course, she's a woman - excuse my sarcasm), instead of saying something important about the murder in case.
One star for pretty and gloomy cinematography.
Poor Things (2023)
All women are Bellas
All of us, who identify ourselves as women, are Bellas. We have gone through similar phases of girl- and womanhood, same partiarchal and societal power plays which we have tried to adapt with in order to be accepted. So yes, the movie has an empowering, liberating messsage to deliver and suck in. And I enjoyed it very much - more of these, please!
Visuals were amazing, I felt like I was inside of an artwork. Nice camera ankles, some remind of old movies. Music was interesting yet disturbing at times.
Unnecessary use of animals for entertainment and shock element, they didn't have any subjective roles.
Arnold (2023)
A very good autobiography
First of all, it's not a documentary but an autobiography. An autobiography by the man itself - a sort of an advertisement of Arnold himself. That's good to remember when watching the film.
In any case, it is an impressive and inspirational autobiography. Well structured into three themes. Full of new video and photo material, funny as well. I was hoping to see more negative sides of Arnold but I guess that doesn't go in line with self-advertisement. Maybe we'll see a documentary one day that includes more of his darker sides?
As we learn from the film Arnold doesn't do anything without a purpose, so I wonder what is the goal he wants to achieve with this film?
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Exploitation and/or true friendship?
I'm not sure what to think about the document. It is beautiful, touching and educational. Perhaps some people will start appreciating more octopuses and kelp forests after seeing it and that's great. It's wonderful to see the filmmaker being emotional about their friendship which seems genuine. I love the environmental initiative which he started rolling as a result.
On the other hand, I could not help and wonder if the document is a sort of animal exploitation itself. Why call someone their friend and make a document about a friendship but not help your friend when they are in need? Perhaps the filmmaker was scared about crossing the line in case it had raised questions about the documentary value of the film.
Lapua 1976 (2023)
Disappointment
I expected to see more about the workers' struggle of getting out of the ruins. That would had offered enough interesting drama. Instead, the movie concentrates on a love story happening mostly before the explosion.
All female characters are weak, they are inactive and described through their motherhood. Men take action and safe lives. I would have loved to see at least one strong female character getting herself and perhaps another person out of the ruins.
I also expected to see more of Lapua, the town where my mother and grandparents lived. Perhaps it was difficult to find good shooting locations. Best scene comes at the end.
