Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)
It's on DVD!! It's on DVD!!!
One of the best spy//hero characters to enter the silver screen and it was released during the cinematic downfall of theatres as we knew them. it was during those years of disappointing films and godawful box office receipts. But you can still see the fun and action and while there are many fine characters nothing stands out like Joel Gray and his portrayal of Chun (the greatest martial arts sensatiom since Bruce Lee) well maybe the banter of Chun and Remo- but Gray is absolutely wonderful. The best thing of all is that just as we could no longer find it on VHS and we Remo fans prayed our tapes magnatism defy the rules of physics this wonderful film finally made it to the public on DVD!! To put it in perspective for you movie buffs (as I realize it is a lesser known title) in Hollywoods decision not to make a sequel of this film I feel as cheated as the lacking sequel of Army of Darkness. Make no mistake it is slightly slower paced but it is that good!!
Mad Movies with the L.A. Connection (1985)
edits + voices+ funny writers= CLEVER!!!!
This mid-80's funny show went beyond the simplistic making fun of a film as we watch i.e. MS3000. They didn't just use bad movies to make fun of they also used classics such as Cyrano and Shock. They edited the films to fit a unique story and told it with voice over characters of their own creation (in 20 minutes no less) As an example: in Below the 12 Mile Reef the film in transformed from a dull story about sponge divers filmed in Tarpon Springs,Florida to Jacques Cousteau fighting sea brain poachers. In one scene a ship is burning and the authorities come to investigate- they begin questioning a frail old man named Gupeteau who tells them about his whittling when suddenly Pinocchio burst into flame. Why the show was ever canceled I have no idea- perhaps AIDS took it's toll on the L.A. Connection...who knows...it was wonderfully funny and I still have a few shows taped and would be happy to share them with anyone who has an interest. Talent should not go unnoticed nor unseen. However, my absolute favorite episode was Cyrano..the redone story about a man with a chip on his shoulder. I do not own this one but would love to get my eyes on it one day...if anyone has it for loan or sale please let me know. On the other hand if any executives out there should happen across this memo you may want to pull them out for syndication or restart the genius behind the laughs consider this format again ...hell, I'd write for you! My Body's Revolting (2002)
you needn't be a starving artist to laugh through this one.
When a successful film mogul priding himself on gut instinct to make money has a change of conscience, he soon discovers his conscience is the easier medium to convert. Lots of laughs brought to you by a cute script and some ideas from the special effects geniuses at Trauma Group. I saw it at a recent independent festival and gave it my vote as best over all film.....got 7 minutes to kill...watch this film and learn a few more ways.
