Orlando (1992)
Another Stunning Success By Sally Potter
I must say that without a doubt Orlando has increased my admiration for Sally Potter tenfold. I cannot deny that some of Virginia Woolf's ideas seem strange at times but Sally Potter has given Orlando a clear direction. I find myself drawn into the plot through music and words not just sitting idly through the entire film. Orlando is a movie that makes you wonder and think. You cannot always guess what's coming and that it the most greatest achievement I believe a movie can have.
The Breed (2001)
Pathetic (Spoilers!!!!!!)
I thought that Adrian Paul could improve his chances at the movies since he did a superb job of acting in the Highlander Series, unfortunately I was wrong. I do mean wrong. This movie is the worst thing I've seen since I watched Barney. I couldn't find a single thing to like about it. The plot could've been written better by a child of six years. The entire movie screamed for help. The amount of real dialogue could've been crammed into the first five minutes, anything else said was either cursing of strange things questions on the part of Paul's character. The only good scene in the entire film is the shot of the woman and her daughter laying dead in the snow, for a moment you get a glimpse of an actual movie. Of course it's the scene where everyone is quiet and no one is moving, and Adrian Paul's doing voice overs. I couldn't even stomach thirty minutes of the film with out feeling as if I could cry. It's a shame anyone was allowed to make such a movie. Please do not watch this. Of course I am mostly complaining about Adrian's shift to bad acting, we want more Highlander, but no more movies like Breed.
The Ring (2002)
It's no thriller...
I was very excited to go see The Ring. I will admit that I went in with great expectations but as far as I'm concerned this film lacked the effort in production to thrill me. I concede that the camera shots were great, the music was intriguing, the main plot however was terrible... The story itself is actually quite good and I believe if told is a different manner the entire movie would be far more effective. I enjoyed the gory feel to the film and the urban legend qualities but otherwise I think it's boring. The characters weren't real enough to identify with and several of the underlying stories never were explained in full. I questioned the presence of several supporting characters. All in all, this film failed to strike any horror in or give me even a hope for nightmares. It seemed designed to scare children rather than adults with tales of the unnatural.
Highlander (1992)
Another one lost in the crowd...(spoilers!!!!!!)
First of all let us all forget any other movies except for the first Highlander one. All other sequels do not exist. If you pick up to the series directly from the first movie everything makes sense. Everything about Highlander becomes much more real and easy to contemplate through the life of Duncan MacLeod versus Connor. My only complaint aside from the last seasons lack of good shows would be that Connor did not appear in more episodes, even if only for a cameo now and then. I could not approve of any of the other movies because they all contradict themselves. Please writers let's actually watch the previous movies before we decide to write a new one. The Series however provided Watchers with something to build on. The plots were usually good and the humor never too corny, however the loss of Tessa Noel's character was indeed sad. It seemed the when the show began to drop the main characters it began to turn into just some random fantasy series. The appearance of Methos was a welcome change. The fact that all villains names started with K (Kalas, Kyros...) and they always seemed to have the same silly lines to say began to become redundant. Richie's useless death was another "oops!". Otherwise over all the Series was good, we miss it, we loved it. We want Methos to have his own show...(more tales of the good Dr. Adams!)
The Tango Lesson (1997)
Spellbinding
I sat spellbound for the entire length of The Tango Lesson. I've become an instant fan of Sally's work. The movie takes romance and drama to a new level of intensity while drawing you in bit by bit into the story of Sally and Pablo. I couldn't imagine a better film to watch for fun. The soundtrack is original and when linked with the dancing it makes The Tango Lesson a memorable film.
Trainspotting (1996)
A movie for everyday
I must admit I was skeptical about this movie but after hearing so many great things about it I had to see it. I wasn't disappointed. Trainspotting is absolutely the best and now one of my favorite movies. Ewan McGregor is adorable as Renton. The characters all seemed alive like people that you might meet in a club or a bar or out on the street. I would recommend Trainspotting to anyone who needs a good laugh or a cry all at once.
