Mandy (2019)
Dry, surreal, silly and very funny
Mandy definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly is mine. Diane Morgan has let her imagination run wild and the results are hilarious. The humour is absurd and, in my opinion, very northern. The cameos are great and I enjoyed the snappy 15 minute episodes. I've knocked a point off as there's a little bit of inconsistency, and the occasional episode that doesn't quite live up to the others.
I strongly disagree with some of the other reviews that implied Mandy is looking down on the working classes. On the contrary, I was rooting for Mandy throughout. She's a loveable wrong 'un.
The Good Ship Murder (2023)
Great Cosy Crime!
You don't start watching something called 'The Good Ship Murder' expecting it to be a gritty, high brow thriller. This is soft crime at its best.
Beautiful locations, larger than life characters, and a good mystery that can be wrapped up in less than an hour.
Yes, it's a bit cheesy, but that's part of this genre's charm. Shayne Ward is a police officer turned cruise ship lounge singer. He even sings a song at the end of every episode! Catherine Tyldesley is his crime solving partner and potential love interest. What's not to like?!
Comforting TV in the same vein as Death in Paradise or Poirot.
