Chromophobia (2005)
Vacuous pretentious nonsense
The other reviews here leave me and 76 friends I watched this with dumbstruck.
I have never witnessed such a self important film in my life, truly mind numbing and empty. I was surprised about 45 minutes in after the vast array of credible actors in the film and couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had agreed to perform after reading such a terrible script, devoid of narrative, substance and style. Then it became obvious when you see Ralph Fiennes' sister wrote and directed it then you realise she woke up one day and wanted to be a film maker, tomorrow she probably wants to open a boutique in Upper Street, the next day raise cattle to sell organic meat. I expect she has the money and free time to take anything up on a whim, hence the stars are her family and friends, it is the only explanation as to why they appeared in this film.
It is a pompous work of utter self indulgence. The attempt to weave characters together was so flawed, if you want to see this when it works, see Robert Altman's Short Cuts. if you want to see a film with the cream of British talent, see anything by Mike Leigh.
There is no redeeming aspect of this film
The Kite Runner (2007)
Can I have the 2 hours of my life paid back please...
I am at a loss to understand other comments listed, after bearing witness to this dreadful film.
I haven't read the book but can only assume the film did not fully reflect it, it was just simply American over-sentiment in another guise.
You have two children talking together as if they are scholarly elder gentlemen, children don't talk like that! We are led to like this central character after he bore witness to his friends rape and did nothing and then go on to persecute his friend. Does his act 15 tears later make up for this? And don't get me started there..apparently you can waltz up to the Taliban leader in a false beard and ask for a meeting just like that! "Oh yes, no problem, 2pm tomorrow do for you?" "yes thank you, see you then" Ridiculous that his childhood tormentor was now heading the Taliban and this puny man managed to escape with his life in laughable circumstances, well not really when you consider this wimp even had to be saved by a child - again! It was an idealistic American view of life, (God Bless them). It was not believable, but unrepresentative, condescending...I could go on, but the sooner I erase this from my memory the better, it pains me to think how truly awful this film is. Although it gave me and my friend much to talk about after if only to tear it to pieces and show it in all its bloody awfulness that it was.
There are many examples of Afghan movie making you can see instead, not Hollywood's glossed over series of events. Genuine film-makers with a very real story to tell. Go seek that instead of this calamity of a film.
