Six Feet Under: Pilot (2001)
Where are the roles for these actors
It's 2023 and I'm rewatching the show for the first time. This is the first series ever where I saw the preview and said & understood that THIS is the show for me. GOT was the 2nd.
As I rewatch episode 1, I see and vividly remember the actors Mathew St. Patrick and Dina Spybey-Waters. They did such justice to their roles (Spybey-Waters with a much smaller role) yet so memorable. Why have they not been cast in even more notable parts since then. Once this strike is over, I hope & pray that things turn more in their favor.
I say this because for me to have such memorable sentiments towards them both nearly 20 years later speaks volumes to their portrayals on screen. I looks forward to seeing their future works.
The Bear: Fishes (2023)
INTENSE!!!!
I really like how this season truly delves into each character. This is a good episode and easy to follow, but GEESH was I drained afterward.
It was definitely written by someone who has experienced similar, as you can't just pull this work from nothing. It was gritty and raw with elements of uncomfortable humor. I had to walk away afterwards and process the whole thing as my family is nothing close to that. It made me feel for the families that can totally relate, and I appreciate being allowed to experience a bit of what some actually go through, even as uncomfortable as it made me at times. I had to catch the next episode on another day as I knew I wasn't ready to take it in.
The Humans (2021)
It was good, but left me a smidge unclear.
Slow moving but deliberate presentation of family dynamics. The differing love languages and misunderstandings; the secrets and elephants-in-the-room; the empathy and care-giving. My uncertainty was whether we were supposed to believe/pick up on a possible haunting. If we're supposed to pick up on it, I feel it may have been too subtle. If not, then I read way too much into nothing. Oh well. Not an exciting flick, but family rarely is.
Swan Song (2021)
Touching & Thought Provoking
A properly paced film with enjoyable acting, and a story line that held me to the end . . .What will the final choice be? Is it sacrifice? Is it selfish? I did expect for the freckle to come up again though. Maybe it's on the cutting room floor.
The Shrink Next Door (2021)
My being so sympathetic to Marty made it a struggle to watch
I found the story properly structured, and appreciated the evolving title graphics. I just felt so much for the victim, that each episode bummed me out a little until the last 2 where I could finally breathe a sigh of relief and cheer Marty on.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Scratched an itch
It was fine. Slowly paced more than half the film. The aging explanation doesn't jive. They Miss Jane Pittman-ed Niobe; not necessary. And does Tif see Neo as we see him, or as the Matrix configures him???? Still glad I saw the movie, even if I had hoped for more for a 4th I stallment. Should have known better.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
I'm @a loss with some of the reviews
First: this is a Western. If your idea is that a movie with Black actors is going to be Blaxsploitation (& you were looking forward to that), just take your ignorance elsewhere.
Second: Tarantino did not originate westerns nor spaghetti westerns. I love a good Tarantino flick, and if you know his work, then you should know he borrowed from / was inspired by the earlier masters (Leone, Corbucci, ...). To say this film is trying to be Tarantino would be a misstatement.
This film is an enjoyable Western with excellent actors. While the story may be fiction, Black people existed in the West as well in those times. They didn't just start showing up when major cities developed. I am so happy this movie was made. Long overdue.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
Well Crafted
This is an artist! He took his current trials, and crafted a set to properly address it. Skilled, humorous artistry. Period.
If I must say more, I loved the personal ending that tied it all together. A touchingly funny in memoriam.
Reminiscence (2021)
It's OK
I mean, I always love seeing Thandiwe's acting. The City is submerged in water, and Nick & Watts' clients are submerged; a subtle reference I guess to the city being a memory itself in a way. This movie just needed something more. I only got engaged with the characters when they were on the hunt for Freddie.
And why isn't everyone walking thru the city in boots or waders?
And how is Nick in the tank for decades without pruning?
Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens: Grandma & Chill (2020)
Comedy, Context & Clarity
So well written . Humor with subtle history tucked in. So fun getting Grandma's backstory. The creative fusion of Asian puppetry/R&B/Korean soap/etc. Well done team!
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Had me to the end
Proper eye & ear candy in Tom Bateman. Well cast doe-eyed, girl-next-door in Simona Brown. Intriguing spin from The Knick nurse to creepy wife Eve Hewson. All wrapped up in a psycho thrill ride. If they do a Season 2, I'm in!
Coming 2 America (2021)
A Fitting Sequel
Enjoyable and worth the 30 year wait. It was great to see all the returning actors.
