i have to say, for a romantic comedy, this was excellent. i'm not a huge fan of them, because generally they are all cheesy and end in a predictable manner. this did, too, but it was done originally and with gusto.
jimmy fallon really breaks out here in his first lead role in a movie (unless you want to count that movie about a taxi...), and it shows. his comedic timing = brilliant. he's the loser guy (much like every male lead in nick hornby's world) who you root for the entire time. you want him to get the girl, and you want the red sox to win, just for his sake. he's more versatile here than we've ever seen him, and he's truly coming into his own as an actor aside from sketch comedy.
the always lovely drew barrymore is, of course, lovely here once again. i don't think anyone ever gets tired of her. she's charming and intelligent and funny here in this role. there's just a certain air about her that makes her just captivating. this role is no different for her, although perhaps we'd like to see her in something a bit different from the sweetly goofy good girl once in awhile. but it works for her.
the movie, adapted from a nick hornby novel of the same name, was awesomely transferred from the football of the uk to the baseball world of the us. as a new yorker, i'm no great fan of the red sox, but everyone in the universe is aware of their fanatical fans, and this movie does an excellent job of capturing it.
what this movie does is mix the romantic comedy with a bit of sports, which makes it relatable to most people moreso than the saccharine sweet movies we are used to seeing. these people are real, we understand their connection, and we root for the both of them. two big thumbs up.
