A Most Wanted Man (2014)
Terrific film
Excellent adaptation of a John le Carre novel. Philip Seymour Hoffman is supberb - watching this film reminded me of the greeat actor that he was. How we miss him.
The Newsroom (2012)
Smug, superficial, pretentious
Maybe the worst series in TV history. When it isn't preaching, it is preening. The characters are smug and and arrogant. The plots are predictable and boring. The men are, generally, misogynists. A really horrible TV show. The writing is interesting as long as you don't actually process the words. Jeff Daniels is supposed to be "the conservative" on the show. Really? He's slightly to the left of Nancy Pelosi. I used to like Sam Waterston as an actor - here, he plays everything way over-the-top like he just got out of acting school. How could HBO ever decide to broadcast this? Smug - superficial - pretentious - and that describes the good parts of The Newsroom.
Inside Job (2010)
Half-right
INSIDE JOB got it half-right and, as such, is half-way worth viewing. Yes, the banks and government regulators and mortgage loan companies and Democrats and Republicans were all to blame. But the finger is not pointed at Andrew Cuomo et al who pushed for the sub-prime loan explosion in order to allow people - people who did not have the financial resources or stability to own a home - to pursue the American Dream. And, importantly, the finger is not pointed at American consumers who speculated on home purchases - whether for themselves or in order to "flip' properties - in hopes of making a quick buck. There is a lot of blame to go around - including looking in the mirror.
