The Gate (1987)

Cover art misleading
20 May 2024
I don't know if there are multiple versions of this movie, but I clicked on the one with the cover showing the boy knelt down. He was wearing shorts and sandals yet not once in this movie did he, nor any other boy have on shorts and sandals. Was that still taken from a different version of the movie? Very odd. He never wore that shirt either. It looks like the same boy. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat for awhile. I'm not a fan of children messing around with demonology. Terry learns the hard way that the world of demons is not to be messed around with. Well, I will search for the missing shorts and sandals. And shirt.

Logically dressed

Great to see most males wearing sandals here in this movie. It was the females who seemed to not want to wear them in this flick. It just looks way more natural to see sandals with shorts. No shoes or socks. Why can't the US be that way? The storyline was similar to Santa Who? And several other American Christmas movies, but I would pick this one over most of the others because of the location and also the logical attire. There is some cheesiness in the acting of some people and some characters are ridiculous. The security woman is a character I really thought could have been better done. Everybody pulls together to try to save Christmas in the end and I will watch again.

Good movie, bad theology.
29 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm glad I watched this movie and really enjoyed it. I was worried for awhile that I would be overly bothered by it because of children being held hostage. I do have a major complaint about the theology in the movie. People do NOT become angels when they die. I don't know why people want to believe in that falsehood. Angels are an entirely different creation of God from humankind. and will always remain different.

I'm glad to see the prodigal father come back to God. This movie was very touching. Angels do exist and do protect us as they did the children that day in Cokeville. Please, though. these were angels that helped the children, not relatives who had passed on.

Ice Twisters (2009 TV Movie)
Why do these movies have to be too unrealistic?
9 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the movie overall. There was a lot of excitement in it, even if the twisters weren't very realistic looking. What I hate about these types of movies, though, are the inconsistencies. These storms freeze everything in their paths - well, that is, anything not a star of the show. Take the poor farmer whose tractor froze up. Oh, and so did he. Yet, they are able to drive a truck right through the middle of multiple vortices and not only survive, but remain unfrozen. Hmm. Well, I like to see a little bit of the impossible in movies, sure. But, if one twister is going to freeze a tractor and a farmer and 3 twisters do nothing but blow around a truck a little bit, that's a bit on the absurd side. I will probably watch the movie again some day if it comes on again because I love tornadoes. Even Twister suffered from what I talked about above. Well, anyway. An interesting find.

The Wonderful World of Disney: Santa Who? (2000)
Season 4, Episode 5
9/10
Every year, I watch it.
5 December 2009
I love this movie and watch it every year. I love little Max Morrow actually getting to act in something. He didn't get much of a chance to do that in Monk. The story is unique and great. The only downsides to the movie in my eyes are the elf segments. They are stupid, but I guess they're interesting to kids. It does suffer, though, from the all-too-common "males are bad/idiotic" stereo-type: The little boy who tortures Santa while the sweet little girl tries to talk to him, Peter as a Grinch because of a bad childhood, the airport security guys stupidly falling into tricks of the elves, the guys who get tied up by the elves etc. Not a single female had any negative qualities. Well, except perhaps the woman who complained about her headache. At least Santa gets to look good most of the time in the movie. Overall, it's a charming film with a great story.

One of the best.
29 November 2009
This is one of my favorite versions of the great story by Dickens. It surprised me that Grammar or Alexander could sing. Most of the songs were really great, though I hate expletives so I give the film -1 for that because I feel that they're out of place in this story. I also hated that Tiny Tim's spotlight in the story was stolen by a little girl and that his signature line was said, I mean sung, by everyone before he actually said it at the very end of the flick. I really thought that Tiny Tim was never going to get to say it at all. Speaking of Tiny Tim, the one in this version is the cutest one that ever there was. I've watched this every year since it's debut, which I thought was on USA network. Another writer says NBC. This is definitely worth the view.
