Ripoff
28 December 2013
This movie is a blatant ripoff! The original Star Trek series did it so much better in season 3, episode 21: "The Cloud Minders," which aired February 28, 1969. I'm so desperate for decent Sci-Fi that I even tried Matt Damon. My bad. I wouldn't even place this movie in the Sci-Fi genre. This is nothing more than overly long social commentary regarding the disparity between the rich and the poor. Besides having holes in the plot big enough to drive a truck through, it's extremely predictable. You know within the first twenty minutes exactly what's going to happen. The characters themselves were unremarkable. I suppose Matt Damon played his part the best he could considering the material he had to work with. But I've never seen Jodie Foster so stiff and uncomfortable in a role.

Bizarre?...Yes. Entertaining?...Definitely.

I've always liked Billy Zane and the parts he plays. Sometimes offbeat, other times erratic, but he always has fun with them. And this tight little flick is no exception. This film reminds me of one of those curious "Indy" movies that comes along every now and then with no particular aim in mind other than to entertain. Granted, the plot has been done before, but it's the characters and the actors portraying them that makes this movie enjoyable. Jennifer Beals looks great, plays her part to perfection, and was surprisingly good singing a haunting rendition of "One Girl In A Million."
