Gulmohar (2023)
Simple story. Awesome acting by all.
The whole story is something that could be a small scene in a typical Bollywood family drama, but the acting by ALL the actors puts life into their characters.
Sharmila looks graceful and is made for the role. Manoj Bajpayee and Amol Palekar are perfection. Simran (Plays Manoj's wife) is a revelation. The controlled emotions and small idiosyncrasies of the characters are subtlety manifested during character development.
Direction is very smooth and continuous with no jerky scene transitions.
For the overall realism, the feel good ending was actually a little off, as I expected some hurt to linger on after the movie. Anyways guess that is what the public wants.
Worth a watch.
Treason (2022)
Not a very believable story line. Too many cliches. Still the pace was good.
While the pace of the story is good and keeps one engaged, the plot is not very believable.
I like Charlie Cox (from Daredevil series) and he fits the role well, I think the character itself was quite shallow, like most other characters. Can't believe how stupidly and illogically some of the characters behave (especially Charlie's ex-Army wife).
The CIA has unlimited ability to operate inside the UK? Not a likely scenario.
I wonder if there will be a sequel as someone actually got away with murder.
The surprise in the series was Olga, who actually put in a decent performance despite a weak character/role. Ciaran Hinds puts in a decent performance.
Overall it seemed that they wanted to finish the series quickly and tried to wrap it up without much buildup. The ending fell flat in my opinion, despite the one shock event that seemed forced in.
The Gray Man (2022)
Good Action. Predictable, but loved the movie. Not that 'stache though.
Gosling is good, so is Evans (though hated that abomination on a fellow 'stached guy).
While the story is predictable for the most part and lot of cliches, the action sequences are very good and the movie keeps good pace.
Worth a watch.
London Files (2022)
Waste of good acting talent. Ridiculous plot and characters.
I am a big fan of Arjun Rampal and he performs well in intense/serious roles. This was a great opportunity to exploit his talent. He does try but the plot is so weak that his actions are unbelievable and make even him seem ridiculous.
The story line is so unbelievable, acting is sub-par, over dramatic. English actors who need translation from Hindi speaking characters, suddenly start responding effortlessly to Hindi dialogues. A trained cops picks up a gun, that has just been used for a suicide with bare hands. Suspended cop gets reinstated by someone else just on a whim. Chanting cults, skin branding and an unbelievable cult leader. Whew!
I really wanted to like this but it's a waste of time. No redemption for this one...
Death on the Nile (2022)
Really wanted to like it, but alas, not up to par.
Full disclosure - David Suchet fan. I even liked the Peter Ustinov version and really wanted to like this version too. But this was dragged version relying on star power to drive the movie.
The characters were a deviation from the book, but that is okay - every version needs to adapt as they see fit. However, the crux of all Agatha Christie/Hercule Poirot stories is the meticulous unraveling of the plot by Poirot - with explanations of events that leads to the deduction(s). And of course a dramatic build up.
Here the plot/mystery is revealed in less than a minute rather dismissively as if they were tired of making the movie and wanted to end it all.
And Then There Were None (2015)
Disappointed with the adaptation. Very Slow. Mismatches in Casting.
First of all, I think I have seen every adaptation of my favorite Agatha Christie book - from the 1945 version with wonderful Barry Fitzgerald playing the Judge to the 1974 Italian made version with Orson Welles voicing Owens to the 1987 Russian version directed by Stanislav Govorukhin. And then some.
This is by far the worst - in my opinion. Though I do seem to be in the minority from other reviews and high ratings. I respect each opinion.
It is okay to adapt, but first the pace is excruciatingly slow the nuances are not kept as subtle as in the book. Then the casting is really bad - especially the lead characters. Maeve Dermody is very unlikable as a perpetually-upset, moody and paranoid character - which she is not in the book. Also Aidan Turner and Miranda Richardson are miscasts. Sir Charles Dance, Sam Neill and Toby Stephens are the only believable characters, who lend some credibility to their roles.
Visually also the film lacks authenticity. I believe they used a lot of CGI for the island and seems they lost the perspectives and proportions. The island looks so small in certain scenes and then so large in others. The house architecture is so out of place for early 20th century.
With the advances in Visual technology, I was hoping for a new take on the story - at least visually. I was quite disappointed. Anyways since I am a fan of the story, I did give it four stars.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
Excellent Action. Made for IMAX
Another great action movie...as always the locales, especially the Burj Al-Arab in Dubai scenes, were simply wow.
The action scenes are well done, the action is continuous, no "down time", the acting is decent. I just did not like Paula Patton in her role, I think they were trying to compensate for replacing Ving Rhames with a white guy as the techie, so they brought in a colored girl instead - very pretty and great figure, I just did not think she gelled in the role - her sequence with Anil Kapoor was lacking both the sexual or the comic relief that was being sought. Another reviewer pointed out that there is no personal connection with the villain like in MI:3 - good point, in order to keep the action moving, not enough time was devoted to building that character.
Great franchise and I love the Ethan Hunt character, just like Jason Broune/Bond in their own right.
Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002)
This is a mish-mash of assorted Hindi and English movies - poorly done
An insane assault on viewers senses. This is a mish-mash of assorted Hindi and English movies - poorly done. The name carries over from a 70s' multi star cast, which the 2002 version also boasts of. The story is taken from the 70s' Sunil Dutt/Reena Roy starrer - "Nagin" and visual effects taken (a horrible attempt) from The Matrix, Terminator 2 and Mission Impossible II.
Set in a college environment (Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Kumar, Manisha - college kids!!!???!!), Manisha Koirala is the victim, who mistakes a fatal assault on her by two students as a collective effort on the part of our heros. As it turns out Manisha is a Cobra (Nag) snake reborn as a girl in this life and her mate from the previous life, now a super powerful-all-and-any-shape-assuming (Ichadhari Nag) - Munish Kohli, is out looking for her in this life. Manisha appeals to him to avenge her violation and murder.
So begins the mad killing spree, where the avenging lover starts singling each male of the group, with increasing powers and tricks with successive attempts. The effects are extremely cheap, with computer generated skeletons, morphing bodies and motorcycle stunts completing the farce.
Carry over from Nagin includes Raj Babbar playing a catholic priest who provides temporary relief to our boys with a more "Religiously correct" multi-religion locket (the original Nagin only had an "Om") . Sunny Deol plays Manisha's love interest in her current life and the ultimate saviour against the all powerful Munish Kohli.
Music and songs are below average.
Avoid if you don't fancy cheap thrills.
