Catastrophe (2015)
Four seasons are simply not enough!
I started this show about three months ago, but I finally just finished it today and I can only say that four seasons are simply not enough!
It genuinely made me laugh, the acting by both the leads is amazing as well as their quirky chemistry, the writing is sharp and to the point... it's simply amazing.
I knew it was four seasons when I first dived into it, but I honestly didn't think that I was going to like it as much as they did.
And considering the ending, I think it would be really fun and entertaining for them to do a spin-off American series (maybe call it "Trainwreck" or something more American sounding instead of "Catastrophe") with Sharon adapting to life in New England, because I want more of them.
Bravo!
Mafia Mamma (2023)
People have no sense of humor anymore
This movie was a blast from start to finish, and Toni Collette stole every scene she was in.
I honestly think that most of these reviews are written by bots, because people take these things too seriously. Honestly, the movie is a solid seven, but I'm giving it a ten because so many people have rated it one star for no reason whatsoever.
Since the very start of the movie, you could tell it's going to be a hoot. And the title is "Mafia Mamma". What did you expect to watch? I went into it with no expectations and laughed my ass off, both me and my husband, and we weren't even high or drunk.
Hands down the best comedy I've seen since "White Chicks".
And all of y'all that didn't like it because of your sophisticated taste, go and laugh at stupid memes on Instagram or TikTok or something...
That '90s Show (2023)
What's wrong with people nowadays? I loved it!
I'm a 31 and I grew up watching That '70s Show. It's one of my favorite sitcoms of all times, I own all the seasons (yeah, even the eight one) and I rewatch it when I really want to just laugh while I'm doing a circle of my own with my husband.
This show is proof of how you do a resurrection of a sitcom the right way. I loved it! Every second of it and it made me laugh just as much as the original show did.
It had all the right punchlines, the cast is engaging and funny, and I LOVED Kitty and Red as much as I did in the original. I honestly don't know why people are complaining about this. I think that nowadays people complain for the sake of complaining.
Don't listen to haters and people who want the show to be exactly the same as That '70s Show, because it is good in it's own right. Just watch it and laugh! It's a sitcom, not a dissertation.
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
I had my doubts...
... but the first two episodes blew me away! I think Anne Rice would've been proud, because even though it is not the story *exactly* how we know it, it FEELS like an Anne Rice story.
And that was anything any Anne Rice fan could've ever hoped for.
I love the way this show is done, I love the costumes and the settings, I love the production, and I love the dialogue and the writing! It's superb.
When I first heard that they are changing the setting I was a bit upset, but it works marvelously! Jacob Anderson is a great Louis de Pointe du Lac...
... but Sam Reid SLAYS as the Brat Prince, Lestat de Lioncourt. They couldn't have cast a better actor, and I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of the guy before this. (I knew Jacob Anderson from Game of Thrones.)
Overall, a very good treat for all the Anne Rice fans! Can't wait for the next episode! I hope they keep the momentum going!
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is simply FANTASTIC
First of all, let me just say that I am so glad that Steve Kloves is back as a screenwriter for this one because it clearly shows.
I was entertained from the very first second and I laughed out loud, shed a few tears and my heart was warmed on multiple occasions for all the right reasons.
And I don't think that J. K. Rowling could've pulled all of that by herself, without the help of Steve Kloves.
Don't get me wrong: I absolutely love J. K. Rowling. I genuinely think that she's one of the most brilliant (if not the most brilliant) authors that are living and creating today. I've read everything that she's published even after Harry Potter and The Casual Vacancy actually might be one of my favorite novels of all time, and the Cormoran Strike mystery/detective novels are in some ways even better than the Harry Potter books.
But J. K. Rowling being a good novelist doesn't necessarily make her a great screenplay writer. And that's totally okay. Because we got Steve Kloves back for this one and it was the best decision the franchise could've made.
The story flows organically, despite the multiple storylines. Nothing seems forced and everything is right where it needs to be right when it needs to be.
I don't want to say too much because I'm trying to keep this spoiler free, but if you have been a Harry Potter fan since you were 10 years old (like I have) you are not going to be disappointed and you are in for a treat.
I liked the previous installment, The Crimes of Grindelwald, but something was lacking and it didn't feel as magical as the rest of the Wizarding World movies until that point. This one hit just the spot and I'm probably going to go see it at least a few more times while it's playing in theaters.
The only thing I didn't like actually has nothing to do with the movie itself, but a gut feeling of my own that they are probably going to try to wrap things up with the next installment, making it a quadrilogy instead of quentology. But I really hope I'm wrong about that.
P. S. Mads Mikkelsen is great as Grindelwald. I think he's my favorite so far and I really hope they keep him.
God's Not Dead (2014)
The Cringe's Not Dead
There is so wrong with this movie, so many cringe-worthy moments from the start to the finish, that I had to pause it and it took me almost 8 hours until I finally managed to finish this atrocity that's labeled as movie - and a movie that had a theatrical release nevertheless. That should be illegal in my opinion.
First and foremost, let me say that I have nothing against Christians and Christianity as a community at all. Everybody deserves to believe and worship (or not) what they want, and pushing your ideas down someone else's throat is very unethical and straight up disrespectful.
You probably know that this movie is about a philosophy student who refuses to sign at the request of his professor that "God's Dead" on the first day of class, and the professor tells him that in the next three weeks he will have 20 minutes at the end of every class to defend his thesis that "God's Not Dead".
And it is as horrible as it sounds.
One thing that bothered me in particular is the fact that they managed to represent an African, a Middle-Eastern, a Chinese and all of them were either existing Christians or converted by the end of the movie.
The Muslims are represented in an awful and ugly light which is very misleading and not the reality at all. As a gay man, I've been more accepted and felt more at home when I come out to Muslims than when I do to Christians, because they don't judge as harsh. Yet, here Ayisha's father went bull crazy when he discovered his daughter listening to Christian podcasts, and dragged her outside and kicked her out of the house. The Muslims don't deny the existence of Jesus or have anything against Christianity or Christians at all. Also, the men don't force the women to wear hijabs or burkas either. That's totally up to the woman and I have plenty of Muslim girl friends who don't wear them, and they come from very traditional families.
The second thing that bothered me is that every person who doesn't believe in Jesus is automatically presented like the villain and the bad guy, like the philosophy professor and his intellectual friends, and all the Christians are represented as martyrs and the under-dogs, which is not my experience with Christians at all. They are usually the rudest and the loudest people and they always try to enforce their opinion on other people, yet the atheists are presented like this in this one, even though atheist don't believe in god and therefore why would they spend time debating something that according to them doesn't exist, yet alone spend hours of their time to convince others that god never was to begin with?
And they way that old lady towards the end told her son that just because he has trouble free life it's from the devil so he can comfortably live in sin - that was just plain ridiculous and it made me laugh almost as much as the claim by the philosophy student that morality can't exist without god and that only Christians have the right moral compass.
Overall, this movie was bad from start to finish, a pure propaganda by Christians and people who are so brainwashed that they can't look sideways and see someone else's point of view. The acting is horrible, the editing is okay, but the plot is completely non-existent. I would never recommend this to anyone, and I'm glad I watched it on Netflix because I would never have paid money for this bull.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
A decent movie by all standards
Alright, people. I think we need to stop doing what we think is cool and just look at things realistically: we already knew where Star Wars was headed when Disney bought it from Lucas, and the expectations for this entire Sequel Trilogy were set with the release of The Force Awakens.
I am a huge Star Wars fan. I absolutely LOVE the original trilogy, and I've come to really like the prequel trilogy.
I've read almost every book in the new canon set by Disney, and a lot of the books that are being labeled as "Legends" after Disney took over.
When I watched The Force Awakens I wasn't blown away by originality or any great character development, but the effects were good and it was nice to be back in the world of Star Wars.
The Last Jedi was less than satisfactory for me, and probably the worst Star Wars movie I've ever seen, especially because a lot of times it made no sense at all, and I felt like it ruined a lot of it by adding unnecessary humor where it didn't need to be. I saw it opening night and I only watched it for the second time when I was rewatching all the Star Wars movies before I went to see The Rise of Skywalker and I enjoyed it more the second time I watched it because the way I looked at it was a sort of thrill ride - you have great CGI, you have a lot of beautiful shots that do nothing to the story, and you are just sort of observing nonsense that makes no sense to the actual story but you enjoy it nevertheless because it's familiar.
Which brings me to THE RISE OF SKYWALKER...
I didn't go in to watch this movie with very high expectations, but I did enjoy it very much.
I honestly thought it deserved a solid 7, but I couldn't bring myself to give it a 7 because of the cheesy Disney cliche dialog that gave me stomach problems, so that's why I settled on a 6.
What I liked about The Rise of Skywalker:
- It had good effects and some of the best Star Wars shots done to date;
- It honored the old characters and also for the first time managed to make me feel some kind of emotion towards the new ones;
- We finally find out Rey's origin story and I thought it made (sort of) sense and explained a lot about her;
- They gave Carrie Fisher's Leia (which is my favorite Star Wars character, right after Grand Admiral Thrawn) a good send off and I thought it was an ending fitting to such a legendary character;
- They tied up some of the more bothersome loose ends and fixed a lot of the chaos that was caused by the mindless nonsense that we came to know as The Last Jedi;
- It had a good ending that personally gave me goosebumps.
What I didn't like about The Rise of Skywalker:
- Too much done-before Disney cliche dialogue. I could predict what the characters were going to say before they even opened their mouth because it's been so overdone in Hollywood, it makes me sick to my stomach;
- Too many cute animals and scenes that Disney is obviously using as a marketing tacktic to sell merchandise. We get it Disney - it's who you are, but we just wished some of that money was used for better writers who would write at least couple of more original dialogues;
- Some things didn't make sense and in a sense a got a lot of Harry Potter vibes from The Rise of Skywalker, which is not necessarily a bad thing except for one thing: this is Star Wars, not Harry Potter;
- The scenes between Rey and Kylo Ren were too much at times;
- Nobody in the theater really cared about Poe because he is just such an unlikable character, so I could've done without him in this entire movie.
Overall, I think this movie was a good movie, even as a Star Wars fans. It is most definitely not a legendary movie that will go down in history and I won't rewatch it as many times as I've seen A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, but it is a good movie in its own merit. I feel that a lot of the Star Wars fans out there will always find something to complain about, just because of how much this franchise is steeped in history and of how long it's been with us. But things change, our society changes, people change. Star Wars is not an exception. I feel like people should still go out and watch this movie. It's an enjoyable ride and it has some very good scenes that gave me goosebumps, and those are always a welcome treat. Try not to judge it too harshly and I promise you it'll be worth your $10.
13 Reasons Why: Let the Dead Bury the Dead (2019)
I understand the low ratings, but I definitely don't agree with them!
This season was better than the first one. I'm a huge book nerd and usually don't like adaptations because they tend to ruin everything, but this is so much better in a visual form that I'm kind of glad they got rid of Jay Asher.
This was one of the best seasons yet, because like it's predecessors it tackles uncomfortable things that people usually don't like to talk about.
Americans think that everything is black and white, and that's why so many people like the first season of the show - because you have the good guy and the bad guys.
But from season two we saw that there's two sides to every story. Here, we see Bryce actually growing up and taking responsibility for his actions - and the show points out very clearly that even if he does realize that what he's done is wrong, it still doesn't justify it, but at least he can move on with his life trying to do good from now on forward. He doesn't get to, because he's murdered but it shows that redemption is possible and everybody can change, and that's a good message to spread.
I've lived in the States for almost seven years now, and I've noticed this pattern of two-dimensionality with a lot of my friends and neighbors who are born and raised in America, and I feel that that's why they don't like the way this show is going.
And the thing Americans fear above else is confrontations, and this show makes them confront the things that a lot of them choose not to see happening around them.
I really liked this season and I'm really looking forward to see what they're going to do in the next one.
The storyline of Montgomery de la Cruz was also very impactful and needed to be said, because there are still a lot of closeted gay guys in the States who can't express who they really are because of parents, community in which they live and because America is still the number one country where people believe in made up gods and anfels
Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2019)
Is this still Game of Thrones?
Um, what is happening? Is this still Game of Thrones? This is horrendous! It's a cliche line after cliche line after cliche line... it is never ending torture. Why does HBO always ruin the best of their shows in the last couple of seasons (True Blood, anyone)? My excitement is just deflated after this episode. I was so bummed after the first one, but I thought it couldn't get any worse than that - it did. I will finish watching this show because I've invested almost all of my 20s watching it, but I have no expectations for it anymore. I am forever disappointed in my favorite TV show of all time.
Halloween (2018)
Worth the wait and the hype
I just walked out of the theater and all I can say is this movie is totally worth the hype and the wait! Jaime Lee Curtis is superb! The horror and the terror in this one are palpable! The entire theater was quiet at just the right moments and the climax is everything a horror movie fan could ever hope for! This is the best Halloween sequel ever made. Period. Go see it! You won't regret it.
The Magic Pill (2017)
This movie is TOTALLY inaccurate and here's why
I've been hearing a lot of people talk about this movie, and I hear a lot of people every day switching to keto diet for health benefits. Trying to improve your health and live a better lifestyle is not a bad thing - it's actually what every human being should strive to do. But you should make your choices and do a good research before doing so. Unfortunately, this hour-and-a-half movie doesn't do so. It's very underresearched and completely based on four individuals. They try to make you feel like you are discovering a thousand year old secret kept by this specific group of indigenous peoples from Australia, telling how "robust and muscular" they used to be, but if you actually look closer at the images they show in this documentary, you'll notice that those two words aren't the first ones that come to mind when you see those old black and white pictures.
The keto diet has swept the first world countries by a storm in the last few years (especially the United States) and when I heard about it, and all the benefits of it, I tried it myself last summer. I bought a cookbook, I made an entire week of meal-preps, and I constructed a very detailed exercise plan. Ever since moving to the States, I started struggling with high blood pressure and the Keto diet was swearing to do so, and I was super excited to do it so I can get rid of my prescription pills. I started the diet and it was going very well: I lost almost 20 lbs in a little over a month and I started to look a lot better. I couldn't believe it, and I felt so great about myself, but then I had a knee injury and I was rushed to the hospital - where I discovered that my blood pressure was off the chart and the chest pain I was experiencing wasn't from hard workouts, but because I was on a brink of a heart attack. My cholesterol was off the hook, and my arteries were clogged up from all that fat I was ingesting. I immediately stopped the diet, and started warning people about the side effects of this "magic pill" that this documentary and all the Keto books fail to mention. And then just three months after I stopped my Keto diet, I heard that one of my customers, who actually told me about this diet, unfortunately passed away from a cardiovascular arrest which led to heart failure at age of 42. Keto diet is not what it's all hyped up to be, and this documentary does not provide any accurate information about nutrition or healthy diet. I say, do your own research and make up your own mind - don't let people who have personal gain (like the lovely chef who is behind this) serve you something as the truth, chew it up and put it in your mouth for you just to swallow.
LOL (2012)
I really loved it
I usually don't watch movies that have ratings under 5, but I didn't even check up on this one, I just saw it... and I really loved it! The story flows quickly and when I first saw the opening scene I wasn't expecting much, but it was totally worth it. I saw a lot of bad comments and reviews after I saw the movie, but the fact is, it is painting a picture of a reality we're living in. You can say all you want about how this movie was about Facebooking, texting, using the internet and technology, but the fact is you wouldn't even have written all of these reviews if it wasn't for the technology. It is what it is, and we can discuss about it forever, but the fact is - this is our reality. But, I think the point of this movie was that no matter how much technology takes over our lives, we need to remember that we are human and that we need to appreciate and respect each other. The reality we're living in isn't perfect, and that technology taking over isn't not that good thing, but we can't stop it from happening and we just have to use it in a good way - supporting each other with it, being there for each other and respect the values of life. I don't want to push it much further than this and write something I'll regret, but all I want to say is - don't be harsh on this one, and give it a chance. It is not actually worth the 10 (excellent) rate, it's more of an 8 or a 7, but I gave it 10 so I can compensate for the bad rating it has and maybe change someone's mind to see it and love it as much as I did.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Amazing!
I went to the cinema to see something completely different, but my friend saw that The Dark Knight Rises is playing in 10 minutes and we thought we might ask if there are still tickets available - and we were lucky. Man, I was sooo happy that we managed to get in and see this movie. It was simply epic. Nolan is definitely the best director of our time. He managed to create a wonderful plot, with the exact amount of visual effects (no more, no less) and, of course, make a wonderful movie with a wonderful cast (I usually don't expect very much from the movies when they have too popular actors and actresses in them). I highly recommend this movie and I promise you - the end will blow your mind out! Amazing!
La cara oculta (2011)
Great thriller
I love watching films in general, but thrillers are my thing. I love the intense situations and the way my hands sweat while I'm watching it. But, I'm very sorry to say that I haven't watched a good thriller film in quite a while. But La Cara Oculta was a splendid dish of what I like. What would people do for love? How crazy can they become? How thin is the line between love and craziness? This is a film when the roles of good and bad change really quickly, and when you start making your own conclusions on the topic, suddenly something happens and you instantly change the course of your thoughts, seeing someone else as "the bad guy". I really, really loved this film! I think it's a great thriller and it sure kept me interested till the very end. Don't you dare miss it!
In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011)
Don't let them discourage you, Angie!
Everyone's been fuzzing about this movie, reviewing it and commenting (mostly bad things) about it, so I wasn't very eager to watch it. A very good friend of mine with whom we have similar taste in books and movies told me that it was not worth the time, so I didn't bother to watch it, because honestly I don't think that it's a good thing when actors become directors, singers - actors etc... But, when I finally decided to see this film, I wasn't expecting very much and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it very much. I felt it. I know that most of the audience (especially the one from the Balkan) is thinking that an American actress don't have anything to do interfering with the Balkan history, but I think that Jolie studied her subject on the matter and did an amazing job presenting it to the worldwide audience. The thing about this story being a fictional one set in war that actually occurred is also a fact that shouldn't bother the audience and stop it from enjoying this great film, because I don't think it's fair to enjoy a fictional story about Jack and Rose, two love-birds on Titanic, and criticize this well written story about Ajla and Danijel. My point is, Angelina Jolie proved herself as a great director and producer, and others who say otherwise are just not happy with this film because it touches one serious matter that is still going on in Bosnia, even though the war is over.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Beautifully brutal and intensely exciting
As a fan of the Swedish Millennium trilogy based on the Stieg Larsson's works, I wasn't very happy when I learned that Hollywood got the rights to do American version of the book. I thought that they will ruin the original film like they did with Let The Right One In. Boy, I was wrong. I wasn't expecting much when I sat to watch the American version of the book, but as the story evolved, I was mesmerized by the vision of the director, David Fincher, of the events. It was more brutal than the original Swedish film and much more intense and clearer. People could actually follow the storyline of the film without having read the book first. The flash backs of the the past were very good touch, I think. And although I still prefer Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth, I think Rooney Mara did a really great job and her performance is not one that you'll forget any time soon after you've watched the film. Noomi Rapace is darker and more manly, and Rooney Mara looks very fragile and gentle, but in spite of that she managed to look very dangerous and like a lunatic, which is something that only a great actress can manage to do. As of Mikael Blomkvist, Daniel Craig was better than Michael Nyqvist, in almost anyway. I only liked the way Michael Nyqvist managed to look like a frighten little child when he was hurt in the woods, in spite of the size of him. Daniel did managed to act that scene also good, but in his own special way. All I want to say is - WOW! I am pleasantly surprised by Hollywood and I think they did a great job making this film. It's beautifully brutal and intensely exciting. If you want trills, chills and enjoy a good story, don't you dare miss to watch this one. Definitely worth the time! Awesome job!
Great Expectations: Episode #1.1 (2011)
Simply perfect!
As a person who loves to read books, I am ashamed to admit that I've never read Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations". I've read some other of his works, but I was always trying to get to know the female classics (Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Ann Radcliffe) and neglected the male ones. This series has what it takes. Since I've never read the book, I'm very satisfied with how the events took place. They're not confusing and you can follow the story. The cast is great (I love Miss Havisham) and I love how they portrait the characters that Mr. Dickens created. I can't wait for the second episodes. I hope they'll keep the good work up! Cheers!
In Time (2011)
A pure masterpiece
I wanted to wait a while before I wrote this review, because when you see film as this one it's natural to be very excited and pleased with it. So, I did wait and I saw it again just to be sure, but nothing's gonna change my mind about this one. A PURE MASTERPIECE! According to me, it's better even than Inception (with all due respect to Christopher Nolan and the wonderful cast behind that legendary motion picture). I was surprised by the performance of Justin Timberlake, and I was very pleased to see Amanda Seyfried in an action film, because she usually plays in drama or thriller films. It's a very good film with a very good point and it makes you wonder all the time: What will you do if you knew you have seconds to live? Is it fair that someone has more time than someone else? How will you feel if you knew how much time you have left? How big is the cruelty of men? Can we be more greedy than we already are? This film got it all: lots of action, romance, drama and it triggers moral questions that we're all bothered by. It's not only a sci-fi film - it's a legendary classic that will go down in history. I highly recommend it to everybody.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011)
The Most Epic Conclusion Ever
I must admit, I didn't like David Yates when he first entered the Harry Potter franchise, but this was phenomenal. I watched it and I loved it so much! It wasn't like the book, but it was better on screen that way. Very exciting, very touching (especially if you're a hardcore fan, like me) and very vivid vision of the last chapters of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". I cried several times, I admit it, and I would never be ashamed to say I did, because "Harry Potter" is with me more than 10 years and I couldn't have imagine that it will end so perfectly on the big screen. I loved the Tale of the Prince, the scene where Snape was hugging Lily. I loved the kiss between Ron and Hermione in the Chamber of Secrets after they've destroyed the Horcrux. I loved the final battle between Harry and Voldemort, with all the extra, exciting scenes that weren't in the book. I loved the ending scene, with the old Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Draco. Basically, I loved the whole thing so much, that this is probably my favorite Harry Potter film - EVER. I cried at the ending seeing the old faces of my favorite heroes and I cried because there's no more Harry Potter. Thank you J. K. Rowling for creating this wonderful and magical world, that will always be my second home no matter what I do, wherever I go or which other book or world I discover. Thank you David Yates for finishing my favorite film series the way they deserve it. And thank you Daniel, Emma and Rupert for being the perfect Harry, Hermione and Ron. I will love you forever. Always.
Seconds Apart (2011)
Enjoyed every scene of it!
I can't believe it! I loved this film so much! I had this like two weeks, but never bothered to watch it, until today. And I'm surprised I kept myself waiting this long! I loved the story, loved the twins, loved the girl, loved the murders! I think it's a great story, and every scene was an eye-blessing. The goth mansion and the creepy brothers with special powers were just the way they were supposed to be and I think it's the first After Dark film worth watching. I've tried watching some other After Dark stuff, but I was finding myself sleeping half way during the film. This is excellent stuff. Definitely in my Top 20! You should watch it! Amazingly stunning!
Red Riding Hood (2011)
The best film I've seen in years!
This is genius! I loved every second of it, every scene of it, every word of it! I haven't seen film that consumed me this much since... I don't even remember! Amanda Seyfried's performance was stunning as always, she's the perfect Red Riding Hood: sweet, goth, dark and just perfectly beautiful! Her soul-mate, Peter, was quite a catch as well. They make the perfect goth couple, which is something I haven't seen in a while. I liked the idea of the first Twilight film, but Robert Pattinson didn't look like a real vampire, nor Kristen Stewart was that dark to end up with a vampire. This is definitely a better Catherine Hardwicke film! I loved the plot as well, the characters and the idea of the forest and the village. I'd like to live there! This is an amazing film! A must see for every goth fan!
