Tom yum goong (2005)
Tony Jaa, The New Jackie Chan?
I was in Thailand and a new movie was about to be shown called Ong Bak. Being a fan of these films i went in to see it and was Blown away by this guys talent. Who was he? where did he spring up from? I just had to show my friends back in England this movie and managed to pick up a DVD (fully Thai) Everyone i showed this movie to blown away by Tony Jaa and news started to be spread around about a new film he was working on called Tom Yung Goong.
Ong Bak was a surprise hit for the makers, and I'm sure they made TYG to cater more for the international market. This year knowing i was going to be in Thailand on the opening night of TYG i had months of waiting until August. Then the time came, I was almost 1st in the queue for the ticket (showing later that night) Sure the storyline is a bit weak but these are Tony Jaa's first few Big Movies and lets face it, you go to see Tony's unique style. If there's a good plot that's a bonus.
I hear hes next movie will be called "sawed" and then after that maybe a movie with the awesome fight director Woo Ping.
Is Tony Jaa the new Jackie Chan? Yes i think he is. With the likes of Jet Lee working on his last period piece before retirement and Jackie Chan well and truly owned by Hollywood now. Get Ready for this new guy.
TYG's Fights in the 1st half of the movie was just about up to Tony's standard that I've seen him do before. But there's a fight scene with a bell strapped to his hand. (trying not to put a spoiler in here) you WILL see a change in pace. I don't know if they changed editor or fight director but he steps up the fights to a new level. they took everything good from Ong Bak and put it in Tom Yung Goong then added another 200%.
What this guy will be in the future with the likes of woo ping behind him will be out of this world. I just hope Tony Jaa doesn't sell out to Hollywood but embraces the talent in Hong Kong and he WILL be the new Eastern Hero.
on a side note: This guy is talented in a big way and deserves to make it big. Sure i picked up a bootleg of Ong Bak in Thailand. because that's all that was available at the time. But soon as the proper retail was for sale i went out and got it without hesitating. it was still fully Thai but i didn't care at all. Now the R1 Retail is out (with English audio) And i got me a import retail of that too. My point? well my point is this, I'm not trying to preach to anyone but this guy deserves to make it in this game. he has real talent not manufactured, and if i can make just a few people reading this who wound normally settle for the bootleg, instead go out and get the Retail of Tom Yung Goong when its available. then I've done what i set out to do in this foot note.
Go see Ong Bak & Tom Yung Goong and see the making of a new action movie Star.
