The Mist (2007)
End of Movie - Killing Family
One commenter here wrote: "The Mist" is about the consequences of losing hope.
I didn't agree with all of his other remarks, but this one was dead-on.
At the point where the protagonist kills his family and friends (to save them from possibly suffering later by being eaten by monsters) there is no indication of clear and present danger, but there *is* a sense of impending despair.
In a way, this "loss of hope" concept is related to forums which require some sort of minimum comment length - to me, this necessity only encourages contributors (who make up a huge portion of IMDb's traffic) to become more verbose when brevity is all that is needed.
Hopefully, forums where individuals express opinions (thereby adding to the content that other individuals will read, thus enhancing the attractiveness of the site in question) won't be auto-monitored for post length, keywords, etc. without valid reason.
Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Brilliant OTT Action/Comedy
This movie had me laughing out loud with its over-the-top silliness and extreme action. Watching the hero repeatedly running away from and shooting at badguys while carrying and protecting an infant was priceless (reminded me of my own over-protective days as a new father).
The film makers didn't even try to pretend Toronto was somewhere else, based on the many shots of the CN Tower.
It made me think of 'District 13' for it's outrageous stunts, 'Shoot 'Em Up' being much funnier and absurd. The bathroom gun/hand drier scene is a real hoot, as are so many other bits.
I DVRed a later showing on one of the movie channels - in fact, I think I'll watch it again right now.
Very highly recommended. You won't be disappointed.
Call for Help (1998)
Not Compelling
Leo Laporte displays his DJ career origins as a "rah-rah" personality in this Canadian resurrection of an older show. "Call for Help" requires that people with technology problems email their situation beforehand. I don't mean to denigrate Leo's knowledge or experience, but knowing in advance the questions that will be asked tends to make one look artificially smart.
Amber MacArthur (supposed web design expert) always looks like she's being told how to smile and when. She also has an annoying, nervous giggle (which can change instantly to a serious, focused facial expression).
This program is a promotional vehicle for Leo and his books and website(s).
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Trendy Shaky Camera
I fail to see the appeal of this series (which is supposed to be sci-fi). It's really just "let's see what soap operatically happens this week" and oh, the Cylons are involved through flashbacks.
The Cylon "babe" that keeps nailing the other guy is pretty lame, it's pretty obvious that T&A was added to the show. Every time she pops up I'm bewildered as to WTF is supposed to be going on. And don't even try to bullsh*t me about "story arcs".
It's a soap opera with some CGI thrown-in. This is not science fiction aside from the original premise.
This series is not everything it's worked-up to be. If you like trendy, edgy, dodgy, jumpy, vague editor-on-crack camera work, this show might be for you. Since nerds seem to be raving about this show, it's a clear indication that vocal nerds' opinions have been changed from Picard's TNG.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Good film, teaches crooks what not to do
I liked this movie, despite the violence and gore (please note: violence and gore are NOT the same thing).
What can I say? One of the best movies I've ever seen.
Although I've never been involved with a botched diamond heist and never had to shoot anybody, I can feel for the antagonists in this movie. Tarantino really did it with this one, I don't think he could ever top it.
See it and see what I mean. It's gross, ugily-realistic in a Hollywood kind of way, and disgusting.
I'm no sophisticated critic, but this movie gets a 12 thumbs up.
