Schindler's List (1993)
The possibility that one simple idea can change your life and the lives around you.
The connection between the people in the film and the audience is almost incomparable with any other film. Even the people who are not regulars, you feel that you know who they are, that you've experienced what they have been through but also realising that how bad this film portrays the war the experience of the Jews will never be displayed to its full effect on the people involved. Spanning through the workers at the end brings to light what a good job Spielberg has done with this connection.
In my opinion this film has more in common with inception then any other . in that there is the possibility that one simple idea can change your life and the lives around you. In the case of Schindler it was the red coat of the young girl who provoked an idea to grow and i believe this is the reason for this film to be black and white. To make sure the audience got the poignancy of that scene, that something so beautiful cannot help but stand out against the rest of the world and effect the people involve more so.
Ralph Fiennes brings a brilliant typically perceived German into the picture, ruthless and cold blooded in the way he unnecessarily kills the workers for fun almost but eventually shows heart. One of the hardest rolls in the film well played.
The ending of the film is perfect as you feel that it has already climaxed with 20 minutes to go and in ways of personal actions changing the storyline drastically it has but in drama it has certainly not . An unbelievable performance by Liam Neeson in its last moments is what pushes this film to 10/10
The Shining (1980)

letting Stanley Kubrick into your head is not a good idea but he's going to get in anyway so much so that you might even be scared of the word Tuesday flashing onto your screen which leads on to many moments where the music hits you at the exact right point.
I surprised myself with how scared i got when nothing happens at all this was mostly due to the use of open spaces and long corridors making me as paranoid as Jack himself.
the downfall of this movie with all other horror is that i take no joy in being scared. This as one of the best horrors every should not only be remembered for it scares but for the acting from Jack Nicholson, perfect. the crazy eyed stare has never and most likely will never be done as good again. It also should be remembered for the brilliant suspense with was added to by the sprained ankle of Jack.
influencing years of "it's not what it seems " horrors
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
ehhh, difficult.
Watching this film for the first time as a young viewer my original thoughts of the opening scene was the surprise that more people do not find it boring but as this is a very highly rated film it must mean that mostly only film lovers and not haters embark on this masterpiece of story ,music and design which is the way i hope it stays.
You may then think it is a bit hypocritical to say this and only give the film 8/10 but the reason for this is not about my lack of believe in evolution but for the length of some of the scenes such as the coloured light scene near the end. As i thought when the story had progressed into its full flow it would be better to end the film instead of trying the demonstrate the uncertainty of evolutionary paths. But don't think bad of me just because i did not like the long end scenes as i understand and enjoy the beautiful opening scenes as many others have said but i don't think these were just for beauty and beauty only these were more to demonstrate the isolation of space and to put that in your mind when the HAL story came into play.
The great influence this gave to the world of film and the thought of the future can simply never be replicated again. One of the small influences form it that made a huge impact on the movie Se7en was the subtly psychopathic Voice of HAL which was replicated by Kevin Spacey so well.
to conclude, not many people have had such an influence on the world of film, neither can many really explain this film fully other then Stanley Kubrick .
