War of the Worlds (2005)
What you would expect
Well what can you say its hard not to be impressed by a film with this size of budget. The sheer scope of the film and it special effects is very impressive but i expected that before entering the cinema. However i also expected the plot as well (and not just because of the fact that it's a remake) but because Mr Spielberg was directing. Over the years i tend to avoid watching his films, they were good when i was twelve years old but now i find them very predictable. But this is what you expect for the 'blockbusters' however what i have a real problem with are Spielberg's endings which seem to constantly ruin an otherwise good film. One prominent point of this is minority report. If you like your special effects big and you actors well known then you'll will really enjoy this however if your looking for something a bit more from a film then i think you'll be disappointed.
Killjoy (2000)
oh dear
Oh dear oh dear oh dear that's all i can say about this film. I saw this film with the comments from my friend still in my head 'this is the worst film ever made' and i must agree it was bad. 1-if you like good acting don't watch this film 2-if you like good special effects don't watch this film 3-if you like a good script defiantly don't watch this film
This however is not a lost cause the directing is reasonable but gets lost in the bad acting bad script and bad special effects and costumes.
This film is quite simply bad, however the crew don't seem to think so on the documentary they all wanted to be a part of this great project and that they intend to do a sequel, why won't these people learn?
Revenge of the Drunken Master (1984)
another one
this is a below average martial arts films which is worth watching for the comedy value due to the part where a pair of symbols are used as weapons. Thats it really there is much to say about this film it lacks in every department because the martial arts are not that great either and with all movies of this type the dubbing as BAD
...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
New Experience
I am a newbie to the whole world of the Italian horror movies, both in respect to the gaillo genre and the popular zombie movies. What i must say about Lucio Fulci's The Beyond is that it does suffer in many areas some areas where it suffers are felt by other foreign films especially from Hong Kong, this is the awfull dubbing. The dubbing detracts the veiwer from the film and the characters, they just don't sound real and so there is no sympathy for them at all. As well as this the film suffers in terms of plot due to many things being totally unexplained and making no sense. An example of this has got to be when the eyes of some of the characters turn white for no apparent reason other then they have seen some shocking images.
however the film has many things going for it, firstly many of the gore effects are very well done and are in fact quite shocking, especially where we see a tarantula bite the victim in the eye turning it into slop. There are again down points to the gore, sometimes it is too obvious that they are made of rubber take for example the glass into someones head, this was far too obvious. The music to the film however is very good, it brings a destinctive style to the film which otherwise might not be there.
The best thing about the film is the end, it is a wonder to behold. This incooperates the visuals as well as the music. Altogether this is an extremly well made film from the Godfarther Of Gore Lucio Fulci although there are some dissapointing factors which it could do without (dubbing) the film is overall very good and would appeal to all gore hounds as well as people who appreciate great visuals
They Live (1988)
Classic Carpenter
Being a fan of Carpenter for some time you begin to see him for what he really is, that is an auteur. He is an individual with an unique style which is displayed through the whole body of his work. Being an Auteur means that the audience can tell that what they are watching is a Carpenter film, They Live is no different. It uses all of Carpenters traits, the shock ending's, great use of the anomophic widescreen and mood lighting. These are why i love Carpenter's work. They live delivers on all of these but also adds a new dimension to Carpenter's work. In this film Carpenter becomes politicaly aware. This is seen in the news bulleten at the end of the film where a reporter bad mouths both Carpenter and Romero. This is one of Carpenters best films, as well as being the best film he ever made for Alive Films. To put it simply Carpenter is a genius and this film shows it. The only problem with the whole film is the casting of a wrestler, this is mainly due to the stigma that wrestlers have when they try and act in films, Hulk Hogan anyone!, but fortunately he's not too bad as to not detract from the story or the film in general. Overall this film is very good and very entertaining, and if your a fan of Carpenter you'll love it!.
Prince of Darkness (1987)
carpenter great this movie aint
I love John carpenters work such as The Thing, They Live and Escape From New york, but i am afraid this movie is just not up to the high standard of these other films. This film suffers from bad acting and a bad story. When i first watched this film i was so disappointed i could not belive this came from the same who brought us Halloween. The worst thing about this film is the acting coming in a close second is the story. This is one of those blips on carpenters list of films which goes along with others like Ghosts of Mars and Escape from L.A. This film sucks.
