Echo 3 (2022)
Something different
First off, the main criticism is the actor who plays Prince, sorry but you did a terrible job. And not because your character is intended to be unlikeable, just the acting, no.
On to the good, I really enjoyed the show. It was not the typical hah Colombia narcos, US good guys. No, it showed a different side and with Violeta had a Colombian character who probably should have had more screen time even. I also liked that below the surface, the show is actually criticising the US and especially the CIA, and Amber did a great job as did Hilde portrayed by a great Franka Potente.
Give this show a watch, maybe watch the first couple episodes (the pilot is a bit slow for my liking) and see if you get into it.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Wasted time
Not sure what the point of this utterly mundane movie was. The ending was good but the rest? Not sure what the story is supposed to be, the movie is two and a half hours long and that is at least one hour too long.
The only saving grace is the acting pair of DiCaprio and Pitt (don't even ask about Margot, what she was doing in the movie is a mystery). Everything else is pointless, I am not even sure why I finished the movie.
The Red Pill (2016)
I think this is an important watch, but it is decidedly biased
I think it is very good at clearly demonstrating men's problems and how mainstream society denies them. And highlighting problems with mainstream society as it is dominated by postmodernism, intersectionality and a more and more rampant totalitarian left wing (think the silencing often with loud protests and vile abuse of those who just want to talk and exchange ideas. In our today's society, liberals think their own morality gives them the right to abuse those that fall foul of it - that is as disgusting as it is dangerous).
What it completely fails to do is acknowledge the infestation of MRA by, in many cases violent, misogynists. There is this complete shock effect at the beginning with the Steubenville case and Indian bus case. Once she gets into the meat of it and the documentary really starts looking and she interviews MRAs, suddenly she only concentrates on specific subsets of MRA. All this violence and hate is suddenly massively forgotten.
MRA is overrun by violence and hate, going into those spheres online even I as a guy feel scared. shocked, so to have a documentary which essentially ignores this, is not acceptable.
That is why I only give it a 8.
Jimmy Carr: Funny Business (2016)
This is trash
He got heckled. His response was a "your mum" joke.
This was a schoolboy making jokes kind of trash. Not a supposedly professional comedian. The other part is that his entire performance seemed forced, his laugh was terrible and he specifically mentioned it - was it supposed to be some sort of joke? And 70% of the jokes were sex jokes, which is where we get back to the schoolboy. Utterly boring.
Dave Chappelle, Jim Jeffries, there are infinitely better Netflix comedy specials out there.
Detachment (2011)
Powerful dark movie, with a hopeful ending
Detachment portrays a glum view of the current education system at what could be any city school and the life of young children who are not supported by their parents. It is full of cynicism and the entire film is shrouded in darkness that comes out exemplary in Adrien Brody's performance.
What stayed with me the most was not the bleak lives the children live, but rather the look behind the scenes at the teachers. In one beautiful scene James Caan tells Lucy Lui's guidance counselor character that "no one ever says thank you". I don't think many people stop to think how their actions affect teachers, people who are essentially there to help them develop as people and support them. I hope this movie can inspire people to think back on their school life and maybe just write one teacher that stood out and say thank you.
Brody's character gives narration throughout the film that give the story a good direction and while the climax of the movie is not surprising, it is beautifully done, with a flashback to Brody's mother that adds pain without being too obvious.
Now the film could have ended at the climax with a dark and bleak ending, but it does not. The ending in my eyes is beautifully done and left me in tears, not out of sadness but out of hope.
