V for Vendetta (2005)
Fantastic
I couldn't recommend this film more. This film is iconic, emotive, exciting and original.
I couldn't find fault with it.
The people with the most power in the world, are the ones that rarely use it. Perhaps this film will enlighten those to what that means.
In many ways V is Batman taken to extreams, when the corruption is all that is left of government, and when the ones that strike terror are the only hope. This films message may be miss-interpreted, but its quite simple, its about power and oppression. About how a government is a subject of the people, and that no corrupt government should last long.
Van Helsing (2004)
Brillent
This movie dosnt pretend to be anything its not. It is FUN. It blends loads of different myths together smoothly and originally. So what if its black & white, 1D characters and co-incidences that would make 24 look plausible. Its simply fun to watch. Its both witty, and with a nice tension that is consistant all the way though it.
Please, watch this film, enjoy it. Dont listen to the critics that attempt to anaylise it.
I loved every second of this right upto the end. The only bit that annoyed me was the slightly corny effect right at the end...but it didnt spoilt the film.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Best Horror film of the year. Funny too.
Some may dissmiss this because it looks a bit like a TV program. Some may not "get" the humour. Some will be dissapointed it lacks explosions and car chase's.
Those people are shallow fools, the people that watch everything hollywood spews out then rush's out to buy the EA game of it.
This is the Eternal Darkness of horror. The obscure game/film that is so fresh and new that most people skip right over it. It will quickly become a cult though. Zombies are scary in this, they are dumb, slow, and can be killed easily. Yet they are scary. Far more scary then the runnning jumping leaping ones from 28 Days later. And far scarier then "Dawn of the Dead". (this, incidently, is more close to the original film...)
This is true horror, and true comady. Strangly they mix perfectly. Dont expect "scary movie",completely unlike that movie this is both funny and scary. The humour is very unique...not slap stick and not gag-based. Its just funny situations.
If you care about original films, or you just want to see a proper horror film. Watch this.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Wonderious
A Wonderious, imaginative film that stands out as a true original. Both its style and content are excellent. A very clever, yet subtle plot that manages to have much more impact emotionaly then many hollywood films put together.
In some ways its too bad it isnt a hollywood movie, at least we would have had more chance of a sequal then ;) The film is very uplifting and inspiring, yet leaves you sad that its over. I truely hope one day we get to see the wonderfull character created in this film again.
ReBoot (1994)
Works on many levels.
Reboot is truely unique. Not only was it the first CGI cartoon, it was also one of the first "kids programs" to actualy have proper plots, on going story lines and decent dialogue.
Seasons 1 and 2 were good enough, have strong techical merity and are packed with original ideas.
But Seasons 3+ is where the series really takes off. Clever storys, great action sequences, non-stop parodys and referances...it really is amazing.
Some of the referances are obvious (Stargate, Blues Brothers,Gilbert and Suilvan) but others are subtle (are you being served).
The charecters truely have depth to them, even the 'evil' ones. Particularly Season 4, which probably has one of the most unique nemisis's ever created.
I could go on talking about it all day, but i wont.
Simple watch it if its on!
Especialy if its either of the TV movies that make up season 4.
Deamon Rising (4.1-4.4) My Two bobs (4.5-4.8)
Deamon Rising, v4.1-v4.4 is my personal favorate.
The Frighteners (1996)
Fantastic cliché-dodging mix of generas
An excelent film that manages to be both frightening and funny. Great atmosphere and imagiative special effects.
I perticularly like the fact the film leads you to believe one thing subtley, only for the complete opersite to be true...without making a big deal of it being a "twist".
