Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie (2014)
Unwatchable.
Though never a hardcore fan, I watched AVGN regularly from 2006-2011-ish. For what it is - silly, nostalgic, and often surprisingly informative - it is good for what it is. I kept hearing about the film and I was skeptical that such a web series would translate well to a feature film.
I was right. This film is just outright terrible. I tried twice to sit through it, but couldn't finish it. Horrible acting, moronic plot, awful special effects, sophomoric jokes (even by AVGN standards) and, the worst aspect, self-indulgent to point of wince-inducing.
Sorry, but this movie is just garbage with really no redeeming value beyond maybe sparing us a AVGN2 movie.
Nothing But Trouble (1991)
Horrid on so many levels.
It's really hard to say enough bad about this film. Terrible plot, wasted acting talent, and an atmosphere that just leaves you feeling "ick."
There were some disgusting scenes of violence that would have been fine for a horror flick, but doesn't work in a comedy. Which brings us to, arguably, the worst aspect of the film. It can't make up its mind if it is a quirky comedy or a horror flick. It, frankly, would fail on both accounts.
There are some truly fine actors/actresses in this movie, but the talent was largely wasted. Chase a few good moments, Moore was passable, and Aykroyd's not so good. It is hard to say about Candy's contribution other than it was another waste of a fine comedic actor's time.
All and all, just a terrible film. There are some movies that are so bad that they are good, this one is so bad it's just bad.
Family Guy: The Juice Is Loose! (2009)
Seventh season & circling the drain.
This was a mediocre episode at best. A decent amount of animation was recycled and the *painfully* long cut to Conway Twitty was stupid and distracting. The Michael J. Fox joke wasn't funny and was in extremely poor taste.
On the up shot, there were a handful of funny scenes and jokes. OJ mistaking Stewie's head for a football was classic, as was the Brian sleeping gag. The appearance of Homer was worth a chuckle.
In summary, it was a very short episode with tons of "packing peanuts" scenes stuck in to pad it out to the 20 minutes. A weak entry to a weak season.
Pushing Tin (1999)
Pushing Crap.
I like John Cusack and Billy Bob Thorton. Both are fine actors and I've enjoyed their films over the years.
This, however, is a travesty. Easily rates as one of the worst films I ever sat through. It is one of those you keep expecting it to get good and it never does.
The characters were annoying and the plot insipid. Angelina Jolie's character has outright repulsive. In fact, there was even moments were you could tell the actors were desperately trying to make a scene work, but couldn't, because the story was garbage.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Dirty Harry (1971)
A Classic.
What can I say? This is a classic. Eastwood's and Robinson's acting was superb. There is plenty of spills, thrills, and macho moments. The 'do you feel lucky ...' clip has enter the pantheon of film scenes.
Still, it also works as a period piece. In that era (1970s) many Americans were fed up with unchecked crime and a system that was doing nothing about it. This film captured that zeitgeist and also gave the audience a fictional outlet for their frustrations. There is echos of High Noon (1952), except it isn't the people, but the system that lets the lawman down.
Either way, it is a fun film. Not to be missed.
Family Guy: I Dream of Jesus (2008)
Fine line between edgy and just offensive.
I've watched Family Guy for years and have almost always found it outrageously funny. This season, though, really isn't going well. The first episode was a simple miss, but this one is truly horrid.
The Surf'n Bird gags were actually humorous for a while, but got old real quick. The Office Space clip was worth a chuckle. The Jay Leno bit, while I saw what they were trying to do, just fell flat.
The worst part was how offensive this episode was. Granted, it is Family Guy, you are expecting a certain amount of edgy humor. This went well beyond edgy. Over the top mocking God and Jesus, an antisemitic crack, and a tasteless joke about River Phoenix were unfunny and repugnant.
