Surprisingly good
25 May 2009
The trailer and the plot about two giant prehistoric sea creatures really made me look forward to this movie. At the same time I knew there were no a-list actors and that the movie had received a low rating on IMDb so I expected nothing more than some cheesy fun entertainment. All the more satisfying to conclude that the movie was actually good.

Of course the idea that two prehistoric creatures can thaw up back to life is ridiculous but that's the kind of movie I want to see, makes for a good plot. The scenes where the shark and the octopus attacked were fun and innovative. Deborah Gibson's character was fun, sexy and charismatic and the friendship between her and the professor was well played. I liked the ending, it contained good action. With a low budget, the downside of the movie is that the computer animation of the sea creatures are unrealistic and they are not shown in any detail.

Quite alright

We sort of know from the start that there's something wrong with the au pair moving into this American family. But the first hour of the film seems normal, like what's happening can be explained naturally. Which makes it even better when the supernatural plot unravels. The wife of the family doesn't like the au pair and at first the wife comes off as overly sensitive but then she's proved right. The sweet au pair has a bond with evil. The characters are well-played which makes the movie smooth. But on a final note, the end of the movie could have used a bit more horror, a bit more ultimatum.

This movie is entertaining and well-scripted. It's far from Psycho (1960) but far from boring. Given that it's a movie made for TV it's quite alright.
