Buried (2010)
Buried: A Movie That Mirrors The Reality
Buried played by Ryan Reynolds is real dramatic, heart pounding and soul wrecking experience anyone could ever imagine. Paul Conroy, a US contractor working in Iraq, awakes in a dark box buried in dessert with only a lighter and a cellphone. The experience is totally catastrophic leaving him with no option but to accept his fate in a softly killing tragedy. From the beginning until the end, its all about helpless struggle with no little hope nor anything that helps the character to escape from the horrible situation. It mirrors reality in a way that people are so cold and insensitive. > Terminating a contract between Paul Conroy and CRT upon learning that he is in trouble- to escape from any obligation that Paul is involved with. > The government and paul negotiation things are useless bullsh*t! - thats how the government play with people, after using them, you are thrown like a piece of garbage. I feel sorry for people who are helpless in a any circumstance they are facing with. "My heart is in the coffin buried with you".
Avatar (2009)
I Am Truly Speechless for Avatar
With so many objective and intelligent reviews, some may have impressed millions of readers and some maybe buried from tons of commentaries and never had any chance being read. But i rather have my feelings written rather than never tried to be heard at all.
James Cameron did it again! Since his Titanic that smashed a lot of movies in the row that left people shading tears, breathless and made his masterpiece a history to mankind, he comes out again with something more spectacular and never seen in big screens. Avatar is truly a cinematic experience i would never forget.
No word to describe the movie as whole but it is certainly a piece of art and a real entertainment. The story is predictable, you can tell what will happen in the end, but what makes it a good film is that the elements to make a story perfect is to add some ingredients which James Cameron didn't fail to put in to. Visual Effects make a humongous contribution for the movie that is undeniably unconventional kind of imagination. Pandora is a perfect fantasy, an escape in which every human desire and aspire for in their deepest subconscious minds glittered with painful reality in this world we live in. Imagine when you are in pain and there is no other alternative cure for it but to tolerate it, then, the only way to alleviate the pain is by thinking something good to at least in a second of your life you will forget everything. That is Avatar! Cameron's imagination is superb and with depth of artistic touch that captures human weakness. Drama is obviously what most people want to see in a story- something that create an unforgettable impression in the heart of every audience who leave the theater. Titanic has touched millions of people around the world that never vanished in the memory like any other movies. Same through with Avatar- it will surely last forever.
The Na'vi are those who believe that everyone has a connection- that if they permit themselves to engage to it will create unity and peace among them guided by a god they call 'Eywa'. There are people like the Na'vi who still exist today- those who protects nature and their culture but are being sabotaged, abused and invaded by outsiders who don't belong with them- leads to destruction and extinction of natural beauty.
The irony: So many people invade other private lives in the most friendly way, become a friend then later leaves devastation of innocent people. Look at what is going on in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. Who are the Na'vi? Who are the "Intruders"? Thank you.
Precious (2009)
Precious should just be in Writing not for a Movie
When the movie was released on theaters, i was so excited to watch it because i thought it was something worth watching. I thought it was something different and makes my day right. There were many movies on the row, one of which is The Men Who Stares at Goats which i also believe to be something soul lifting- but i ended up crossing my leg for Precious.
Though out the story, i remained optimistic and was able to hold myself to walk out of little disappointment and somehow ponder and hope to get something useful to give a little concern. The movie for me is not a masterpiece but an eye opener to those people who remain blind of the reality that is COMMON to our society even before. The story is simple and is sandwiched with flashes of day dreaming by a Harlem teenage girl who is fat, illiterate and ugly. She is raped and impregnated by her freak father and watched helplessly by her own mother.
The theme of the story is common to most places where poverty is overwhelming. Crime become a passion to many of them where hopelessness numbs the minds and rather engage to something where self satisfaction is filled up to ease the painful reality. Lack of education, poverty and drug addiction may lead to crimes like robbery and rape. In Precious, incest happens- impregnated for two times and maltreatment is obvious. How could a mother allows her daughter being raped by her husband and watched without doing something? How could a mother stop her child from getting education and rather seat down, watch TV, eat, smoke and make a huge ass? Another issue in the story is the high number of people living in Welfare. Imagine the United States where people around the world look up and dream for holds high number of people living in Welfare- others on junk places. Welfare is a resort of the government to at least maintain a good image from the rest of world and house them to a place where they are hidden from shame when reality checks itself. Rather than allowing them to stay on streets and subways, they are hold in place where their visibility is controlled- Welfare.
I think the reason why Precious receives some awards is because people who judge the movie are not exposed to cases like that and are carried away feeling overwhelmed and finally raises concerns among them. How could they not know its existence? Its common. For the movie itself, i don't find it interesting but as i say an eye opener. The casting is good but i feel a little doubtful with the character played by Mariah Carey as a social worker- an irony of her Diva looks.
As a whole, Precious is a so so movie- the theme is there but for entertainment sake its four out of ten.
The Kite Runner (2007)
Beautiful Story of friendship, Loyalty, Lies, and Redemption
I was cleaning some stuffs in my sister's place where I moved now and I almost threw everything out. I noticed a book, "the Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, and I had a feeling that it was a good book so I saved it. Every free time I had, I buried my nose on it and in 3 days I finished it. I asked myself, why it was only now that I knew of a good writer like Hosseini who had that wonderful story that have touched my life and my past aroused in me to give a little reminiscence. Not that I came from Afghanistan but, the story has partly shared with my past experience of my childhood. The Kite Runner is a wonderful story of friendship, loyalty, lies and redemption.. I love it. A couple of days ago after I read the book, i bought the movie and watched it 3 times. I couldn't imagine how perfectly it is having the words come out to a clear vision of life-like experience of the life of a young boy Amir. His friendship with Hassan is stained with lies and the worst being dispersed by unimaginable terror of human thirst of blood. Amir is a complete opposite of Hassan. Amir is coward and selfish, unlike Hassan who remained a real friend despite of being forsaken at the time he needed his friend Amir most (rape). To escape from his guilt he made Hassan and Ali left the house. It is Amir who drove Hassan to his painful fate. But "there is a way to be good again" as Rahim told him. To redeem his sin and his father's, he has to rescue the boy- his nephew. In the book, the story is well told and riveting..powerful! The movie lacks a little characterization. The actor who played Amir lacks the emotion, in fact it's monotonous. No sign of fear when he went to Kabul and got face to face with the Taliban, i saw no doubts and i could read from his face that he is just doing his job. The young Hassan has probably the best in the casting, he played really well and carried out his character. Overall, it's a wonderful movie for me. Thank you!
Ploning (2008)
Ploning is unconventional
I have been so hesitant to watch Filipino movies because they are very predictable but Ploning is different. Its brilliant and certainly a masterpiece for me. The story depends on the characters not the plot. Its back and forth of the scenes make it really exciting. The cinematography is excellent, a new beginning for Philippine movie industry which changes the style and mood from the conventional way of movie making to a more advance story telling. I am so amazed how those characters carry themselves in a way that you will understand what they feel and what they really want. Ploning (brittle) is instrumental for Digo to find his past. everything is surrounded by stories to which everyone should at least remember not to forget. Simple things make sense. I give a two thumbs up to the designers and scouts who really did their homework to make the movie realistic . The panoramic view of the place adds excitement and calmness to which everyone feels every angles of the camera works. Its a story of love, sadness and hope. I love it!
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Pure Cinema
Slumdog Millionaire is probably the best movie i have ever watched for 2009. I recommend this movie to all independent filmmakers and students who are planning to shoot their first film. Make this your inspiration as you continue reaching for your dreams.
Cinematography is amazing! The angles are well defined as it reveal the highlight of the story, the slum. The cast, Dev Patel, has played a very intelligent role as well as the rest of the cast. The young and middle Jamal, and Saleem, have developed and portrayed a very realistic mood that make the story very significant. The setting, a slum part in Mumbai reflects not only in the country but the whole world. The face of the world, the reality, that 70% of countries around the world have been suffering for a long time. Poverty, prostitution, crime, violence and oppression are common and visible realities that are deliberately ignored over the years.
As an aspiring film maker, I truly admire Danny Boyle for bringing this echoes of realities to the world. The movie as a whole is a pure cinema! Admirable and truly a masterpiece!
