Moonlight Mile (2002)
not funny, not moving
It's hard to categorize this film. It's neither comedy nor drama. The film has a few comic moments, but those scenes are rather sporadic and distracting. Funny parts and serious parts are not well-connected in this film. 'About Schmidt' dealt with this problem much more skillfully. The director should have concentrated on either funny stuffs or serious stuffs. I give 3 out of 10.
FairyTale: A True Story (1997)
He's a trained actor...
Although two child actresses have done a great job, the story is unconvincing. Here CG looks so fake, they shouldn't have used it. They should leave it to viewers' imagination.
Paul McGann(who played Elsie's dad)may be a trained actor, but he's been reduced to the status of a bum in this film.
Le fils (2002)
motion sickness
This film made me sick - when I say this, it's not an idiomatic expression. I literally became sick, because of its camera work. No long shots. Lots of close-up scenes. No static shots. I easily get sick, carsick, seasick or whatever. even swings make me sick so while watching this film, I had take mint chewing gum to soothe myself.
The film itself was not as bad as people said. I haven't watched Rosetta, so I cannot make comparison but this film made me motionless while I was watching it. My eyes were fixed to the screen and I couldn't avert them. The film's ever-growing tension kept me in that way. Plus, there was no distracting music. Gourmet was so convincing that I thought he was a non-professional actor.
Overall, it was quite a watchable film.
L'armée des ombres (1969)
very serious
This film scared me. There's no humour, no joke. Its tone is dark. I normally like films with a lot of dark humours, but this one is definitely not the one of them. Yet I was hooked by this film. It has certain seriousness which many films are lack of these days. It's a shame this film is rarely shown.
Mojo (1997)
Aidan Gillen's film
I watched this film on late night TV and I was hooked. I didn't know Aidan Gillen at the time but his presence was dominant in the film. Whenever he laughs in the film, his eyes never laugh. His character is totally unpredictable - you never know what he's gonna do next. Gillen's acting makes the film tense.
And personally, it was a fun to watch Ricky Tomlinson playing his father.
The Quiet American (2002)
spurious storyline
I've just watched the film at London Film Festival. I saw Michael Caine there so I should have told him that the film was hideous.
Caine's performance was superb. Brendan Fraser was convincing as a clean-cut yet mysterious American.
But I think the relationship between Caine and a Vietnamese girl part was totally irrelevant. That part was the film's biggest downfall. They didn't describe enough in the film why Caine's character is into that woman that much. She just looked like an eight-year-old, brainless gold digger who doesn't have her own opinion and just does whatever she was told to do. She was a just another younger lover of European old man. The only reason why she sticks to Caine was money. That's not love.
And Vietnam in this film was superficial. They only showed surface of it, not inside. Well, it's usual for Miramax film, I suppose. Great hype, no content. Maybe it's because of the novel which the film is based on. I don't know.
It is a very shallow film. Some will love it, because the girl is pretty. But to me, it was a total waste of time and money.
