Feast of the Seven Fishes (2019)
A story about an Italian culture
The main story of the movie is the Italian culture of young people back in the day. I came here to look at the cast and see if they were Italian. While many of the actors appeared to be Italian by name it looked like there were random white people in some of the roles. There also appears to be some cultural appropriation of Italian roles filled with random white people of who knows what culture.
Other cultures are at least attributed to the area of the world they come from. You can't look up "white" on a map, while some might not see it there are many different white cultures. Some come from civilized countries and others came from countries frequently at war. The Spaniards, Italians, Germans, French, Russians and Swedes were considered to have "swarthy" complexions compared to "white" people. Cultural appropriation is wrang regardless of what culture you're from.
The movie is kind of slow as they draw out the cultural story which makes me think about the cultural appropriation even more, I had to find something else to speed things up.
Best. Christmas. Ever! (2023)
Just No.
SPOILER ALERT!
The women in my house were not impressed.
The husband is a wimp who hides his Christmas letters to friends and family from his wife for years. After unexpectedly showing up at his ex-girlfriend's house in a blizzard under questionable circumstances they have to stay. The husband is touchy feely with his ex-girlfriend acting like the wife has a problem. She sees her husband's letter come in the mail but was unable to open it and see what was in the letter. She asks her husband if he still communicates with Jackie, he says no and gas lights her through out the rest of the movie. She plays the typical self-defeating woman apologizing for everything.
It's like they took the Save the Cat! Guide on writing a story structure then filled it in the extra space with random BS.
Look Both Ways (2022)
Ridiculous story says girl can't chase her dreams because she's pregnant
I thought we were past the days that said young people couldn't chase their dreams because they are accidentally having a baby. So flipping ridiculous that we're still telling this tired story.
How about telling the story of her going to LA as a pregnant girl and making it work. Damn!! I'm so tired of young people seeing giving up on their dreams as the only option. In 2022 we're still having this discussion??? Still telling people to give up on their dreams??? WHY????
What is the purpose of the movie? To reinforce young people to not have babies or their dreams die? To make kids born to young parents feel like they ruined their parents lives?????
Not to mention they aren't even that young and they have 4 year degrees. Does this mean people younger with less education should just give up now????
The Valet (2022)
Condescending attempt at humor
The story line is humorous, however, the humor stops when he's having lunch and doesn't know how to order a sandwich. Over and over they take cheap shots at the valet. His awkwardness isn't displayed as being nerves at all of the people, but rather him being stupid and over indulging in anything free.
Tired of working people being displayed as being stupid. It could truly be funny and still present him as having a brain.
Maid (2021)
Wow! This IS real life for women that is rarely spoken about
I'm watching the first episode and can't get over the reality of this story. The money counter? Absolutely true this is how people live, which is exactly why minimum wage needs to be higher. The gaslighting from Sean- this sounds so real. The writers and directors get it, that never happens.
Where are you going to go with no money? Who's going to help you when your family can't be counted on due to mental illness and toxic relationships.
People under a lot of pressure don't always make the right choices. When you're in a constant state of fight or flight, hungry and unsure of where your next meal will come from, and tired without a safe place to rest, all while taking care of a child it's hard to make all of the right decisions. All of this to say that the judgmental reviews of this character with the benefit of hindsight can go take a leap.
Hugs to all of the moms living this life, congrats to the moms that made it to the other side.
