The Cheating Pact (2013)
Enjoyed the adventure as predictable as it was
Made for TV lifetime movie and in typical fashion was quite predictable but comforting all the same. Had several familiar actors/actresses, the acting wasn't all that great but sure the heck beat being bored at 2:AM and wide awake, lol. While the story dealt with many emotionally charged immoral issues like: Lying, stealing, cheating, and even murder it was STILL a safe view for young children. ONLY "Lifetime" could pull off this feat. I quite enjoyed the adventure as predictable as it was. The characters, while a bit eccentric, did indeed resemble real people we encountered throughout high school years. I particularly giggled to see those mothers who "knew their child would NEVER do that" and defended them on misguided faith. Most of us adults, have ourselves been there too. I was however disappointed to see both a school administrator and one mother teach, excuse, ignore, and even teach immorality by example in order to protect their own interests at any cost. I wished somehow that these two were punished harshly.
The Solomon Bunch (2013)
The story idea may have been great. The execution just didn't work.
Thought this would be a cute movie to share with my kids ages 10 and 12. Was really looking forward to the healthy moral and value features so many of today's films omit. Sadly the film was soooooo very slow that my children grew bored in the first 15 minutes. Comments I heard were "Kids don't really think this way at all" and "parents don't really speak this way" and "How come all these kids run around without any supervision ever" I admit, I too.. found many scenes very unrealistic and hard to swallow, lol. The film was cheesy with a CAPITAL "C" and had a cultish feel to it. As if, perhaps, some small town, narrow minded church filmed each scene using only non professional actors ( members of their own congregation ) themselves with messages or ideas they WISH were reality in today's world. It was completely unbelievable and the lines were very forced. In all honesty we turned it off and found an alternate film to watch that actually entertained us.
The story idea may have been great. The execution just didn't work. Perhaps this film was created for a very very young Sunday school/church camp audience? Definitely not for mainstream public viewing.
La misma luna (2007)
Feel Good Movie this is NOT
The boy is adorable yes, the storyline good, the underlying messages leave a lot to be desired however. I was disgusted in fact to see how being an ILLEGAL immigrant was portrayed as something to be proud of.
Harsh realities were portrayed well throughout this film, however... all were COMPLETELY unnecessary. The movie made me feel violated. The first issue I have is any mother (particularly a single parent) actually leaving a five year old child (essentially abandoning) to illegally cross into another countries boarders and steal off their resources for the fantasy that her sons life may someday be better for her actions.
The mothers character does not actually come to life until 20 minutes till the end of this film (yes an hour and a half of watching before you feel ANY connection to this "main character") - unreal
Inappropriately displaying ILLEGAL immigrants as martyrs all throughout this film is very unrealistic. Inappropriately displaying INS officers and the US police force as hostile, violent, bullies all throughout this film is also very unrealistic.
This movie was obviously written by a misguided narrow minded (or very naive) person with prejudice and discrimination running strong through their veins.
The journey of the boy to find his mother was heartfelt indeed, but the political bigotry made it so not worth the watch.
No se aceptan devoluciones (2013)
Pleasantly Surprised
WELL WORTH the TIME spent reading subtitles. This movie had me laughing very nearly from the get go, yet by the end I was entangled into the heart of this families drama and shedding tears like the best of em'. AWEsome movie! Not a typical movie at all, this was unique in soooo many ways. The storyline was so beautifully original with interesting twists and exciting humorous events to keep you glued to the screen. From beginning to end I was intrigued. I would recommend this movie most to adults 25+ years. This may also be a great way to introduce a loved one to the art of subtitled movies. It is an English / Spanish mix right up to the end. Storyline taking place between Mexico and the USA. A wonderful father / daughter movie perhaps to be seen on fathers day YES!
