Kaala Paani (2023)
Wow!
Brilliant acting, beautiful cinematography, crisp and tight plot. While watching this show, it feels as if nothing gets wasted (in terms of plot). Every small action is important. If you like shows where they show you a small unimportant thing that later turns out to be important, this show is fillied with such scenarios. Grim but also somehow wholesome. It's a show where you'll feel and care for the characters. Every person is important. And the attention to details even in dialog is something that I can't stress enough upon. Take this exchange for example:
Junior: Sir I have a theory, this will work.
Senior: you don't have a theory, you have a hypothesis. You haven't proved it yet, so don't call it a theory.
I mean, the writers and makers have kept so many similar dialogues which other shows won't. They chose to focus on small details without compromising in pace and story. No unnecessary heroism, no melodram, just pure logic and emotions.
I'm on episode 4 and so I haven't even touched my remote. I'll say it again: ACTING & CINEMATOGRAPHY!!! One of the best Indian OTT shows so far. Just marvelous.
Depp V Heard (2023)
Cringe-fest and Triggering Because of Depp Devotees
I'm not sure what this docu-series is actually trying to accomplish, but for me, it solidified my belief that some people on this planet have way too much time to queue outside court, stand on the curb-side or make those cringey online video in the name of content creation. Plus, it also solidified my belief that this trial in particular wasn't really a trial but a PR campaign from both sides, where one side won and other lost. Court cases should allowed to be just court cases but here the way people made videos, screamed in those so called "reaction videos", I just kept getting triggered and had to somehow sit through.
She (2020)
They should have named it chhee
Disclaimer: I'm not against sex, profanities, gore on screen. I'm a huge fan of Anurag Kashyap and game of thrones (well at least till season 6). I had given She 5 stars for first season but then after 2nd season I just can't go beyond 2. Here's why: there is no plot at all. Everyone talks about "big plan" which doesn't feel big at all. The antagonist is supposed to be scary where all he does is kill people with a straight face or talks about his weird ass theory of: kill your loved ones, you'll feel powerful. There is no onscreen chemistry between any character. There are so many plot holes, so many of them. Everything looks zabardasti ka and aiwai. And the sex, oh it's so pointless and stale that it starts to feel boring after a couple of times. I mean, it doesn't feel organic and it feels that the scenes have been added just to make a show a bit scandalous and nothing else. I couldn't feel any sympathy, love, affection, hatred for any character. What i could feel was frustration towards the team for not even trying hard and creating whatever they felt like creating on day of shooting.
Do yourself a favour, and avoid She. There are many better shows out there if you support women empowerment, if you like to see something scandalous, if you like to see action, or whatever this show pretends to be. Heck, there are better shows if you just want to kill some time.
