My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock (2022)
It's an excellent impressionist narration of the master and his craft
First, the elephant in the room is the narration. I am watching this documentary and while I do enjoy the discussion of the masters point of view on his films which is fascinating, I cannot help being manipulated somehow using the masters voice taking words obviously not written by him as if it were. For me, it is very distracting. I really been written or added to by a screenwriter in the 21st Century. Alfred Hitchcock has been dead since 1980 and there have been many articles, documentaries, filmmakers, actors, cinematographers, artists, books and scholars that have had points of view of what certain scenes meant or how they should be viewed. The shower sequence in the film, "Psycho " alone has two masters, Alfred Hitchcock and Saul Bass. This documentary answers many questions but at the same time is glaring in it's overuse of the impressionist voiceover. For many in college studying film this gimmick likely will not bother them. It is likely they have never experienced a Hitchcock film in a revival theater being projected on the big screen. For a generation watching these films on a small screen via streaming, blu ray, dvd or video it will suffice. If it's information you seek, this is filled with it. Mark Cousins has made an enjoyable film for the 21st Century. For those over a certain age who have watched the master, read or heard his interviews with Truffaut or Bogdanovich listening to the impressionist rather than hiring an actor to be a narrator rather than the master himself, I found the film a bit to distracting to give it the full due it deserves.
The Rebels (2014)
Good actors , weak plot ,seen it done better in the past
This was a great effort by the casting person of good actors in the roles. Unfortunately, the storyline and jokes just aren't funny . Too many stereotypes and old tired gags. Contains a bad main title song and equally average end title. Talented people working on something you would easily switch . "This show ain't gonna win no prizes" at least not in my opinion. Judge for yourself on Amazon Prime maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so. I am not going to tell you the story because it's in the plot and everything you would think happens actually does. Suffice it to say that nothing original or unique occurs in the half hour that hasn't happened before. No one actor shines or stands out except the use of the occasional profanity.
Bosch (2014)
Great acting, believable characters , strong plot . Well executed
The story is based on the characters created by novelist Michael Connelly who is also the co-writer and co-producer. Due to his involvement, the script and dialogue is tight. The casting director found the right actors, the cinematography looks great and the procedural police drama showcases the plot like a good novel. If I had one quibble it would be not knowing a little more background on the characters. This is a fine edition to your viewing enjoyment. It ranks alongside True Detective on HBO and the original BBC series Edge of Darkness and Life on Mars. I would be disappointed if Amazon doesn't give this pilot an opportunity. It's not formula series and is done in an enjoyable way. The show has heart and kudos to the cinematographer for making Los Angeles look like a crime noir city again.
