That Thing You Do! (1996)
An underrated 'Wonder'ful movie!
This movie is a great feel-good one, even thou its about a journey with ups and downs.
First of all, I think the entire cast were perfect, from Guy's father right down to Lemarr, everyone had character that you could immediately feel. Every scene from when the story begins is easy flowing and just about detailed. This movie may be a 'back-of-the-shop' job, but is worth it.
Moving on with main characters, I actually loved how Guy confidently changed their lives for the first time at the school-show, the nerves of the other band members trying to deal with the sudden of it. From that night, their lives change completely
.and through the journey we have Jimmy's stubbornness, Lenny's cringe-worthy humour, TB Player's quirkiness, Guy's young innocent fun charm, and of course, Faye, who is like a '5th' member of the band, and her story unfolds itself from the beginning. Every character's individuality makes for clashing and bonding.
Of course its great that Tom Hanks played a role in this, some parts he lends his fast humour and it works.
I liked how this story goes, I really do, and I applaud Hanks for making a small-time movie so well. I would recommend you rent this, if you like sweet movies with good simple-telling storyline. It should leave you smiling! :) I rate this 9 out of 10.
I'm Going to Tell You a Secret (2005)
brilliant!
I saw this on UK TV last night and really enjoyed it and it left me feeling emotionally touched. It's really like a Truth or Dare Part 2 (as many have said), but the huge difference is Madonna.
Back then she was in her early 30s and doing a larger concert and really had the world at her feet as this amazing female artist who was very fit and very controversial. I was 16/17 that time too, when I was a huge fan of hers. Big posters of her in that famous conical outfit, long blonde ponytail expression, lots of 'suggestive' poses - but even though I was young and my mum was insistent in sitting behind me watching TOD, it never bothered me. I was never discouraged and continued loving Madonna. I think, where she has always been a bit forward, etc, those were the years she was reaching out on a different level, but it all turned against her (the Sex Book, etc). Fast forward a few years and Ray of Light album re-ignites Madonna's flame of fame. She looks good and thou the album seems a little strange with some chant type music, I think she was quickly opening our ears up to see how she was a new person in herself. Ray of Light (song itself) certainly was a club-floor burner. Move on to Music album and I absolutely love it! Drowned World Tour, thou not seen as her best work, was one I actually thoroughly enjoyed
..
.but onto this documentary, and I have to say the very beginning of it was strange, almost sinister. But rolling on and through it, watching her pick new dancers for the tour (Cloud is absolutely amazing!), to getting ready for stage, etc you can see Madonna still gets a bit nervous as I feel she strives for a perfect concert all the time, nothing wrong with that, but perhaps it was a bit evident back in TOD it made her seem a little 'bitchy'. But by gawk this woman IS a great entertainer! The costumes are colourful, thou the concert seems a little smaller than Drowned World, it seemed a little more intimate with the fans. Anyhow, watching her in Slane, and she is taking care and making all aware of the rain, etc, when she gets into the car and while driven away mentions about 'suddenly forgetting what she sang and danced too' (or along those lines), maybe I'm imagining things but she looked a little upset? I felt a little emotional with that and the scenes of her sweating etc, and looking a little exhausted. Suddenly it hits you, while she is incredibly flexible and fit and looks great, its easy to forget about her age and possible physical changes coming ahead you know what I mean. I loved the scenes with her and her kids, and with Guy in Dublin, etc
..and sharing moments with the dancers.
The whole documentary was worth it for me
.now that I remember the old Madonna and see the new one, yes, the lady has changed. I also think marriage and kids have contributed. Her voice is stronger, deeper and sounds better than ever I think. She is not quite the young fit, loud, controversial, rude woman we remember 12 or so years back, but she is still a great singer, dancer, entertainer in fact I commend Madonna on coming as far as she has, all the highs and lows, etc
.she is still a top person, many of the public have been rude and wanting her to retire and say she looks terrible I say she looks terrific and is in better shape than a whole lot of us. She is not afraid of trying something new, and never was. Heck I'm almost 30 and still regret never going into dance when I was younger, because when Madonna is on, I seriously want to go to a club and dance all night she makes me feel alive again.
Maybe any public reading this will think I'm talking rubbish, or don't know what I'm talking about. True, there is a lot to Madonna I don't know, but I like to enjoy the great things in life when they happen 'for the moment', and she is one of them. She is one person I've always enjoyed watching, and at least with her videos and concerts you ARE guaranteed fantastic dancers! she is all about fun! If she does happen to ease off or have a last tour as her kids get older, I will always remember this woman, who was never ever boring, and who finally became a better person for herself. Respect!
Forces of Nature (1999)
real fav. of mine!
Now this is a film I really enjoy watching now and again. To me its a feel-good comfort-type film with its magic and visual effects. Of course, Im a huge Sandra Bullock fan and saw nothing wrong with her role in the film. Affleck, on the other hand, irritated me a bit. He came across as weak, crap, and silly on most occassions. A lot off pple say Sandy carried the entire film on her shoulders - I could agree. Without the character 'Sara' the film would be lost, as I say most of the film suddenly revolves around her and her personality. I also love Sara's make up style. I would say because Sandy naturally has strong, bold features, she was able to carry it off, esp with brown eyes.....and it worked! (Believe me, if I had similar features, I would be wearing the same..;)...). But this is how I saw it: a guy going to get married, but we can see in his face hes dreading it, disaster strikes at airport, Sara was there and to me Sara saved him.....in a sense, as someone said here, she made him see how he had cold feet. Of course she has her own personal probs and the scene where she meets Karl, made me feel embarrassed for her, in how Karl said what he said. No-one likes to be made to look a baffoon in front of strangers. And the two most likely had this physical attraction grow between them, but mentally were not suited to each other.
Sara has a very quirky, funny, free-spirit, good-humoured type of personality......so as Ben is stuck with her he sees just how much she is different from Bridgette, and very attractive too! Remember this is a film, I know so many pple out there want films to be very realistic, but sometimes the odd magical special-effects film where there is fun in a story of a journey can be a nice break and refreshing to watch! And in films we can play around and create the non-realistic! I applaud the makers and cast (except Affleck) on this film.........as its one I really really enjoy, mainly because of quirky Sara! A huge 9 outta 10 from me!
Celebrity (1998)
Fantastic!
Believe it or not, while a lot of you out there found this film utterly shambles, I found it absolutely fantastic and very well directed! Now, given that, I have never seen Woody's other films, nor want to, Celebrity was always one I wanted to see in general, NOT cause of DiCaprio. My opinion? Kenneth (yeah for another great Northern Irisher!), was absolutely brilliant as writer Lee, in fact, Im convinced that Ken had to act like Woody ....in that he played Woody's character, and played it so well! Ken is one of those actors who can look and act completely different from one film to the next, something very rare in today's actor world...and I just found this 'story of his life' in diff. chapters interesting and funny! Esp, when it comes to him visiting Brandon, and he is trying to get a word in edgeways while Brandon is freaking out, and I laugh my head off at Lee's hairdo when Brandon is letting him out the hotel room the day after.........jaysus that bit craics me up big time! LMAO! And Judy Davis was very very good.....shes lovely. And DiCaprio did shine in that movie, may not have been a big role, but I have always stuck by DiCaprios work in that the boy can deliver well on screen. So playing Brandon, who never shuts up, *LOL*..:D, was quite funny. Remember u need as many diff types of characters as possible to make many movies work, and Celebrity does just that.......its like one huge circle and we are all travelling round it through the diff Chapters of two lives.......excellent!
Well done Woody!
