Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Devil's Deal (2021)
Very good episode
I thought the last episode was pretty pointless, and I was looking forward to seeing more episodes that look at the new Empire's effects on different planets. The last episode explored this idea but in a very cursory way. If that means taking a detour from the lead characters, that's fine by me. After all, the series takes place at the end of the Clone Wars and the beginning of the Empire, so exploring the theme of a slow descent into totalitarianism and imperialism on former Republic worlds or allied worlds is par for the course.
I think the nuance that goes into these characters and their different ideologies regarding the Empire's occupation gives them more depth and makes you care about them more. (Also I don't think the fact it has Hera in it really adds or subtracts from the episode's quality overall; you don't need to have seen Rebels to understand what's happening in the episode). What makes the episode interesting is the internal disagreement between the Syndulla family members about whether the Empire's occupation is the price they have to pay for peace, or whether they've basically shaken hands with the devil. Also it continues to delve into the recurring theme of Clone's opposition to their commanders, which will probably be expanded upon in the next ep of the arc.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Probably on the level of Ridley Scott's "Body of Lies."
No spoilers. Just a quick review.
I went into this movie with low expectations. I expected this movie to suck. While this did not exactly happen, there was not much in the movie that really struck me as amazing or worthy of Best Picture. The characters were mediocre and the main character was sometimes over the top. It seems the film was trying to be more real than it actually was.
There were good parts of the film, however. There were some parts of the plot that may surprise you. It was sometimes suspenseful, but do not expect much in terms of action. I cannot help but compare this movie to Ridley Scott's "Body of Lies." I think if you enjoyed that, this will be equally enjoyable. Likewise, watch "Body of Lies" if this film did appeal to you.
In conclusion, it was somewhat entertaining, but it tries to be more realistic than it is.
Avatar (2009)
I see a franchise coming along...
And I would enjoy every movie, book, comic, or fan convention that it entails. Was Avatar just good? I think Avatar is the spawn of something truly great.
On to the movie. The 3D was excellent. For the first time I actually felt a part of this amazing cinematic experience. The visuals in general were stunning. They make films like Transformers look like last decade's stuff.
The story was great, but the characters are what make it what it is. The characters make you want a future franchise. I felt the same way with the original Star Wars movie characters. I found myself actually rooting for some of the characters to survive.
I hope potential film makers will look to this in the future. Like Star Wars changed movies in 1977, Avatar changed movies in 2009.
100% perfect.
Suzumiya Haruhi no yûutsu (2006)
Philosophy/Sci-Fi/Anime Drama all in one awesome show.
This show is great. Not only is "Haruhai Suzumiya" a very well written anime show, it also reflects things like Philosophy, Science Fiction and a little religion. It's hilarious at some points and "cute" (for lack of a better term) at others. Actually this may be effect to my lack of experience with Japanese anime shows, but it is one of the best of its genre I have seen.
I mainly have to give credit to the writers. I haven't seen such brilliant scopes of imagination in a television show since the original Star Trek. I hope the writers continue to add strange new characters and give more insight on the already great characters that have been added.
9/10
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)
Impressive... most impressive.
I really enjoyed watching the first season of this show. Initially, I had low expectations for it when it first aired here in Canada (because of the movie).
I was pleased to see that it had a stable story line and everything any Star Wars related story should have. Sith, Jedi, aliens, droids, GOOD dialog (great relief), characters you could relate to.
It was not really like the originals, of course, and the aura of something different can anger people. But I think this series had a different approach. This series is welcomed by fans with open arms because it had the unique ability to entertain those who have loved SW since 1977, and those who are new fans to the story.
I look forward to seeing this series go through its course, and I look forward to seeing the SW galaxy expand.
