The Closer (2005)
Love this show!
A recent episode called "Maternal Instincts" was such a tear-jerker. Brenda really showed her true colors - a caring and compassionate person. Maybe the writers wanted to show how she has grown over the years from a rather self-centered person to someone who could actually be a mother. It was a brilliant piece of acting and writing for the entire cast.
I live in Atlanta and was born here. Brenda's southern accent is rather thick for Atlanta, but just right for some areas outside the Atlanta metro area, perhaps middle or south Georgia. In any case, her accent is so good that when I first saw the show, I remember thinking "I didn't know Kyra Sedgwick was southern!". Guess the joke's on me - she's from NYC.
This isn't the kind of show you can just have on in the background. You really need to focus on it and appreciate it like a fine glass of wine.
Hawthorne (2009)
too bad to live
God, I loathe this show. I've given it 3 watchings and it just gets worse and worse. Please, don't anybody think this is representative of any real nurses in any real hospital on the planet Earth. Nurses, especially ER nurses, do not have time to discuss their "relationships" at length while at work, or interfere in patients personal lives. That male nurse and the blonde nurse are both so dumb its amazing they ever got through nursing school. And why does Jada Pinkett Smith walk around with a mean, don't-cross-me look all the time? Unless of course she is being the patron saint of all nurses. Here's a recent exchange in the last episode: Patient: You really can perform miracles! Hawthorne: I try! Lord - hand me a bucket, projectile vomiting will commence in 5 seconds!
Ghostly Encounters (2005)
Canadian ghosts just aren't very scary
I've watched G.E. many times, hoping for a nice scare. I'm always disappointed. The format consists of sitting a nice Canadian down in a chair in an empty studio and just letting them talk about their "ghostly encounters" which, frankly, seem kind of boring. I think it might be better if they edited the monologues to be shorter, and add more dramatization. Maybe have 3 stories per episode instead of 2, and move things along a little faster. If you've ever seen the show "I Survived", that has a similar format: sitting real people down and letting them talk. But "I Survived" is absolutely riveting compared to "Ghostly Encounters", and doesn't even involve ghosts.
Twilight (2008)
Doesn't follow stereotypes
First of all, let me say I haven't read the Twilight books, so I came to this film with no preconceptions. I thought it would be a mildly entertaining teen film. But from the very beginning, the character Bella is such a sweet, shy girl, not like the typical bitchy teen in so many movies nowadays. Kristen plays the part like a real girl, and reminded me of how I felt going to a new school in 10th grade and not knowing anyone. The kids are nice and welcoming, which is also breaking stereotypes. Her dad is loving but not controlling and tries to give her as much freedom as he can. She falls in love with Edward slowly and I love the fact that there is no SEX in this film, but that makes it even more romantic. Its not clear what Edward's sexuality is really all about (guess I'll have to read the books to find out), but in any case he restrains himself and they fall in love emotionally. Its so old-fashioned in a sense, but that makes it so much richer. After the scene in which they acknowledge their love, the film really takes off! As a female, I have to admit that I would LOVE to be Bella! I can't wait to read the books and see the subsequent films.
