Ender's Game (2013)
stunning
This is a great looking movie. There are a few scenes that really are breath taking.
Visuals aside, I found the storyline kept me interested ( for the most part). I have not read the novel upon which the movie is based but I was able to follow what was going on quite easily.
The acting is good, given the youth of some of the performers I was impressed.
There is a brief section in the middle that dragged a bit, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the movie.
Its more than just the brainless shooter that I was afraid it might be.
Its not going to change anyone's world view but its an entertaining evening out.
Given the quality of the effects it might be worth seeing in IMAX. I didn't see it in IMAX.
Escape Plan (2013)
a movie for men who like manly men movies
This movie is the perfect for men who like other men. Everything about this movie is masculine. This will join the ranks of classic men's entertainment like Over The Top or Stop and My Mom Will Shoot. If you've ever wanted to see the two manliest old geezers in cinema history, bonding with each other while locked up together in prison with other manly men, this is the film for you. Young people would say this is a bromance or a man crush, but its not. Its 80s style man on man action all the way.
I don't know what else to say about how excited I am for this movie. Will Sylvester live up to his nickname of The Italian Stallion? I can't wait to find out.
Pacific Rim (2013)
too stupid for words
lets be honest about this. There is practically no plot and the actors are given nothing to do. There is nothing for the audience to empathise with and its practically impossible to care about what happens and the fate of the characters.
Yes. I know. There is LOTS and LOTS of CGI. I have no interest in CGI. I think the kind of people who do are those who are distracted by shiny objects.
Its sad to see Del Toro ( whom I do admire) turning out a complete dud like this.
There is some consolation in the fact that this turkey flopped and there won't be a sequel.
'Orrible (2001)
pathetic
It seems that only 2%of the people who saw this alleged comedy hate it....but the other 98% have forgotten it.
"Written", for want of a better word ,by narcissistic talent vacuum Johnny Vaughn who also stars. The co-star is Britain's Least Funny Man Ricky Grover. Grover's presence in any production in any capacity guarantees an instant fail.
The majority of people say that this series is unfunny. They are wrong. Unfunny is the lack of amusement. This production is actually ANTI funny ie the opposite of funny.
As well as being ineptly written and acted it is incompetent in every imaginable area..direction, production values and so on.
If you haven't seen this tripe, count yourself lucky.
World War Z (2013)
any and every episode of the walking dead is superior to this
This is pretty much a cookie cutter action movie with Brad Pitt and his comedy hair. It was robbed of any attempt to generate horror or suspense in order to get a family friendly rating. When watching a zombie film I willingly suspend disbelief that the living dead walk the Earth. This suspension of disbelief does not give the film-makers carte blanche to cobble together any old moronic claptrap that doesn't make one iota of sense. The presence of a fantasy element does not negate the need for a plot, characterisation or acting. Unfortunately the makers of this film seem to think that zombies automatically generate a free pass that permits lazy, perfunctory film-making.
Save your money. This is just a Z list film that happens to have Brad Pitt in it.
Dredd (2012)
Judge Dredd blew me away
I have never seen a 3d movie before and didn't really want to. My local cinema only had 3d showings so I went along to an early evening performance.
The movie is excellent. I suppose it could be said that the early chase scene freeway and vehicles look too contemporary but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the scene. Most importantly Karl Urban is Judge Dredd in every way.
Anderson is played by Olivia Thirlby, an actress I hadn't heard of before this. I will make a point of seeing other films she has been in. She is excellent as Psi Judge Anderson..tough, sexy and providing a spark of humanity and idealism to counter Dredd's ruthless cynicism.
The action scenes are excellent, the cast fantastic and it looks astonishing.
One of the things that most impressed me was the 3d. Obviously I have nothing to compare this to but I've had negative comments about films being shot in 2d and converted. The 3d in Dredd is totally immersive. I honestly felt as if I was in the thick of the action at times.
I genuinely advocate watching this film on the big screen..haven't seen a 2d version yet but it is worth the 3d price.
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
a thriller that really thrills
The Bourne legacy is a really enjoyable experience. I had never heard of jeremy Renner until recently and he has impressed me greatly this year.
rachel Weisz is still beautiful and gives a great performance as marta.
The brilliance of the performances is one of the strengths of The Bourne legacy but there are no weak elements.
Tony Gilroy adds great depth to Robert Ludlum's concept with the addition of Aaron Cross and his network of agents. There is a slow beginning to the film as Gilroy ( who directs as well as scripts this time out) adds details that will resonate in sequels.
There are impressive action sequences throughout the film but they are more effective than most action movies as they combine suspense and action. You really feel that things could end badly for the characters that you identify with. Gilroy is a master of twisting the knife as far as suspense goes. The shootout in marta's house is heart stopping and the final chase is unbelievable. The guy in front of me was gripping the arms of his seat.
The Bourne legacy is another triumphant entry in the Bourne series. I can't wait for the next one.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
breathtaking
I've pretty much enjoyed all the Mission Impossible films- they forced me to re-evaluate my derisive opinion of Tom Cruise. I really, really liked the third film so I'm surprised to be able to say this is the best. By far.
Cruise is on top form in this movie, and against all my expectations turns in an exceptional performance. It's hard to believe that he is almost half a century old. He throws himself into dazzling action sequences that would defeat many actors twenty years younger. Back in the day action heroes of fifty were dreadful old codgers like Roger Moore and the rest of the decrepit cast of Sea Wolves etc.
The story is convoluted but gripping and maintained my interest. The IMF team suffer a series of reverses and nothing works out how you think it will.
The cast are uniformly excellent- Simon Pegg can do no wrong, Paula Paton is sexy and believably tough and after being initially skeptical of Jeremy Renner I heartily embraced his character by the end. I'd be delighted to see them all again in another movie.
Brad Bird is a new name to me- I don't really watch animation- but he gives an impeccable account of himself here. There are some stunning visual sequences, heart stopping moments and a couple of laugh out moments.
Do yourself a favour. See this on the big screen. It really is worth it.
A Day of Violence (2010)
i've seen some rubbish in my time
This is one of the worst films ever made. There are a lot of films on the IMDb that have suffered that accusation but in this case it could actually could be true.
The first sign that this is a cut and paste oater made with no care is the casting. Various rent-a-thug types play various rent-a-thugs ...badly.
These people always appear doing the same thing in zero budget British trash. They're not actors and they should stop pretending they are.
There is no plot, no character and the dialogue is embarrassing. Real actors couldn't say it convincingly let alone the talentless no-hopers here.
Despite opening with a sex scene and a couple of very violent and graphic torture scenes this is a very boring film. There are no good points.
44 Inch Chest (2009)
below average
with the team behind sexy beast and a fantastic cast I had high hopes for the movie. Sadly my hopes were not realised. 44 inch chest isn't bad, its just not actually good. The ingredients from sexy beast are there but the cake didn't turn out as well. It didn't rise in the oven.
The amount of swearing is unbelievable but anyone who's seen sexy beast will not be surprised by that. The acting is excellent throughout, with Ian Mcshane getting some laugh out loud comments.
I might be biased against cockney gangster movies but i really thought this movie would be ten times better than it was. The script feels like a first draft. It has ideas but they don't go anywhere.
Lightning didn't strike twice. A let down.
