Mean Girls (2024)
Still FETCH to me after all these years
So I'm an 80's child and amongst my peers are all those who starred in the OG Mean Girls. I'm naturally a massive fan but was sceptical how this remake would be for me as someone now in their 30s. When the critic reviews started appearing I expected to be utterly disappointed. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It felt faithful enough to the original to feel a comfort, yet new enough to give you plenty of fresh smirks. The music moved the story along so seamlessly, you'd be forgiven to think it had always been there. Casting was pretty solid for me with the exception of Cady, who did not necessarily give a poor performance, just lacked that likability Lindsay Lohan was so good at portraying. It left me rooting for Regina more but I wasn't mad about it. Some characters I actually enjoyed a lot more in this remake, particularly Damian, Janis and Karen. I'm sure Disney fans like me will also love and recognise the voice of Moana aka Auli'i Cravalho. I've liked it enough to now be considering seeing the stage show when it comes to London. Thank you for the escapism Tina Fey!
Sister, Sister (1994)
I miss this show!
As an 80's child I grew up with all the classic cartoons like Ducktales, Gummi Bears, Thundercats and Ghostbusters then when I was in high school I had the shows like Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Kenan & Kel, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Sister Sister. Watching these shows was something I used to really look forward to every evening and when they are shown in a rare repeat on TV I love watching and reminising.
Sister Sister had some great episodes. There was something about the mannerisms of the characters which I found just hilarious - I especially remember this of Lisa and Tamera. I remember we were also occasionally treated to the musical talents of Tia, Tamera & Marques Houston (Roger) which I always enjoyed. What was most pivotal about Sister Sister was that despite being a comedy show with the occasional unrealistic scenarios it did address many things teenagers go through and could relate to. The characters seemed like real people and I'm sure I was not the only one to grow up with and love those characters.
I don't know what people expected out of this show but to me like many other similar shows that aired at the same point as Sister Sister they were marketed at teenagers and young adults who appreciated them a lot. Most of these shows had around six seasons so they must have been doing something right! Personally I think this show was fantastic and I hope we get it on DVD soon :-)
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)
A guy's review of this film
I saw this film at a special advance screening yesterday, so here's my opinion of the film as a guy (contains spoilers)...
I had seen the first one previously and thought it was very funny. I've never really saw Bridget as a hardcore chick flick because I actually enjoyed the first film. Yes it did get soppy at points but I'd gladly watch it at any point if its instead of turd like 'My Best Friend's Wedding', 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Steel Magnolias'. Predictable girly favourites and predictably dull!
Well this sequel is more of the same really. Some hilarious moments including sky diving (and landing in a pigs sty), skiing, Bridget on magic mushrooms and a bunch of Thai jail birds trading with Bridget in order to wear her bra. There's also another Hugh Grant/Colin Firth fight which was very funny.
I've heard this film isn't that close to the book. The character 'Rebecca' actually turns out to be a lesbian who snogs Bridget at the end of the film. I've been told this is not the character from the book? This was maybe changed to bring the guys in, lol. 'Rebecca' is well hot!
In general, very entertaining hilarious stuff. Yes there is some soppy moments but the 80% comedic element of the film makes up for that. If you enjoyed the first, you'll enjoy this one and if I can sit through it as a hater of Hugh Grant I'm sure other guys can.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Shiver me timbers!
Since I have been on the ride 'Pirates of the Carribean' at both Disney World Florida and Disneyland Paris I was very intrigued to see this movie since it is an adaptation of this classic ride.
It is absolutely great! Its nice to see something original for a change rather than yet another sequel or 'superhero' movie. The sword fighting sequences are wicked and the special effects of the cursed pirates add a great eeriness to the film. All the cast are great but Johnny Depp probably steals the film in his hilarious portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.
This is a 12A in the UK and pretty suitable for everyone although I wouldn't recommend taking a child under 7 as they may find some of the scenes very distressing. Don't miss this one!
