Smiley (2022)
A Colorful and Heartwarming Gay Rom-Com Almodovar Style
"Smiley" is a cinematic candy for everyone who has love in their hearts, gay or straight. It is a colorful celebration of a belief in human kindness.
"Smiley" is sensitively directed, authentically written, superbly cinematographed, precisely edited, and well acted. A combination that gives "Smiley" a soul, something you don't encounter much this days in the realms of American cinema.
You can't watch "Smiley" without remembering the wonderful filmography of the spanish master director Pedro Almodovar. In a way, "Smiley" is what we have been thirsty to get from him in the past two decades.
Yet, "Smiley" does not spare social criticism for the LGBT community. It's not just a colorful celebration, it boldly places a mirror for at the pattern of prefering a form over a content, and far-fetched trends in the guise of progress, when underneath it all lies the basic need to feel loved and belonged.
All of that makes "Smiley" a reminder of how a romantic comedy should be.
Dunkirk (2017)
Overratted (what you are really going to see in Dunkirk)
Felt a big disappointment stepping out of the movie theater, the expectations were huge. I've been waiting and waiting for something to happen, to the narrative to go somewhere, and suddenly, its over. like a big prologue to a movie that will never happen.
After the disappointment has cooled down, i can say this is a modest film about a certain tragic situation during war world II. there are no main characters that the viewer can relay to. a main character isn't the issue here, only the situation, and its stressful, horrifying and isolated, and all this hard emotions are well crafted and expressed using cinematic tools.
i can conclude that this story is close to the heart of Mr. Nolan, and he wanted to make a movie out of it for a long time.
Cheers.
