Bad Eggs (2003)
Very Disappointing
[Minor spoilers!!]
I have much respect for Tony Martin, Mick Molloy and Bob Franklin. Tony Martin and Bob Franklin especially so, being, in my opinion, two of the funniest men alive. However, I thought that Bad Eggs was terrible. It had several gags that were extremely funny (Australia's Most Wanted and the 4 colour pen come to mind immediately). But on the whole the movie was not funny and the plot wasn't interesting or clever.
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't "understand" this brand of comedy. Bob Franklin's work on Jimeon, Tony Martin's on the Late Show, and even Mick Molloy's "The Mick Molloy Show" were all Australian television moments that I thoroughly enjoyed. Bad Eggs contained only glimpses of this humor and I didn't care for the plot. I guess I was expecting it to be a whole lot funnier than it actually was. I felt this movie didn't carry enough humour to be a comedy, nor was it successful as a crime/thriller/drama. It did neither well, falling somewhere in the middle . . . . mediocrity.
Cmon guys. You should have done much better than that! I was expecting Tony Martin's writing combined with Bob and Mick as the main characters to produce something much better.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Style
Kill Bill is a masterpiece. Stylistic brilliance at it's absolute best. That is what Kill Bill is all about - style. If you can appreciate its' attention to style then you will love it. If you can't, then you will most probably see it as a shallow, excessively violent slash-fest. Tarantino has fashioned every small part of this film to work together in the same artistic direction, and the result is phenomenal. It was tied up nicely too, so to not feel like an abrupt cleavage of another film. It is definitely a worthwhile feature in its' own right.
Kill Bill has my highest recommendation.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
The finest
The finest film I have ever seen.
The premise - a shy, quirky young woman engaging and random acts of kindness and falling in love with an equally bizarre young man - is executed to perfection. Wonderfully shot with a vibrant soundtrack, Amelie is technically brilliant. It's also clever, funny and deliciously warm.
Highly recommended to everyone and anyone.
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Fantastic
Shakespeare in Love is a fantastic film that looks at the parallels between Will Shakespeare concurrently falling in love and writing his famous play, "Romeo and Juliet". Those looking for meticulous historical accuracy look elsewhere. This is a lighthearted romance that has enough references - usually comical - to the plays and playwrights of the time to keep literature buffs happy, but does so in such a fashion that those who know nothing about the literature are not excluded from enjoying the movie. Brilliant performances all round. Highly recommended to everyone, regardless of interest in or knowledge of Shakespeare.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Enjoyable
Enjoyable romantic comedy that looks primarily at the differences between men and women by examining the metamorphosis of Harry and Sally's platonic friendship. Can men and women ever be "just friends"? How does this compare to a relationship? Are the two even mutually exclusive? Interesting questions are raised and humorously answered. No real depth, but fun all the same.
Very worthwhile, even for those usually opposed to "chick flicks".
