Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Artistic integrity won
This movie ticked all the right boxes, singlehandedly restoring the Snyderverse. Not only was this an absolute thrill ride from beginning to end, but I am dying to know what comes next. We AT THE VERY LEAST need a Cyborg feature film. I am absolutely floored by this one. Zack Snyder's magnum opus.
Forget the originals!
Get the Snyder Cut!
Get the Ultimate Edition!
Get the message DC!
Better Call Saul: Quite a Ride (2018)
Come on...
I feel like we're spinning in circles here. Nothing happened in the last 5 episodes. I could have just skipped them, seriously. This is "Fly" from Breaking Bad all over again, but not as well directed.
MOVE IT ALREADY!
Friday's Child (2018)
An exceptional, yet flawed, masterpiece
I was in a trance for most of the run time. It nosedives a little bit in the end, tacking on a plot that was barely introduced before and making it the main point of the film, but I'll give it a pass because that's not what the film is about. It's an experience. I could not take my eyes off the screen for a second. Amazing work from everybody involved. Definitely watching this one again!
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
The movie was fine and you guys are just whiny babies
The film was not a masterpiece or anything, but it was entertaining and fun. The action scenes were spectacular, Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor were awesome and the film was competently directed with some great ideas here and there. If this had a better script, it could have been something truly great. I'd watch it again.
The Boys: The Female of the Species (2019)
Diabolical
This is the best show on TV right now. Well, streaming, but you get the point.
This episode is paced to perfection, with twists aplenty. I had to pick up my jaw from the floor so many times. Best episode of the season and proof that a show like this is exactly what the world needs right now.
And... That airplane scene?! Oh, man. You guys aren't ready.
Joker (2019)
I don't think I've seen such an impactful film since 2014
Our audience started applauding at the end of our 10pm SUNDAY screening. SUNDAY. I was devastated by the authenticity of Arthur's emotions. I believe this is a film for the ages. Not since 2014 (Whiplash, Birdman) have I felt this devastated after a film. It's a required watch for fans of Batman, DC or movies in general. I'm going back tomorrow, btw.
The Twilight Zone: Replay (2019)
The ending had me rubbing my eyes in disbelief.
The episode started off ok. This concept has been played out in the past by many other pieces of media but the dynamic with the policeman had me interested enough to keep watching. The episode was watchable and had it reached an ok ending, I may have given it a 5 or 6 out of 10. But then near the end, something flipped and it suddenly, out of no where, turned into one of the most laughable, preachy, unbelievably implausible pieces of entertainment in recent memory. I thought the 2 first episodes ranged from good to average, but this is really the stroke that broke the camel's back. I won't be watching this trash fire of a reboot anymore and it's pretty much all because of that borderline so-bad-it's-good ending.
Creep 2 (2017)
Absolutely brilliant
Unlike the first film, which I very much enjoyed, this sequel is actually justified using the found footage format.
It is a step up from the first Creep in every conceivable term. The script is better and more focused, the characters are more defined, the humor is subtler yet more memorable, Mark Duplass' performance is unhinged yet incredibly relatable...
I have binge-watched both films in one night and all I can say is they reinstated my faith in the found footage genre. This movie has transcended the genre tropes to become its own unique, unforgettable thing.
Rogue One (2016)
Terrible characters make for a terrible movie
I have loved Star Wars since day one. I grew up with the prequels, which I now consider half-assed cash-grab attempts, but I recognize the actual reasons why the first ones were great. And it was not because of the X-wings or the Death Star or the lightsaber fights... It was because of great characters, which Rogue One is completely lacking. These characters are empty shells pretending to be characters and it makes the story feel stale and uneventful. Why should I get invested in these action scenes if I don't care what happens to the characters? Don't get me wrong, the movie has its moments, particularly near the end. But these moments would have been so much stronger if I felt even the slightest feeling for any of these people. You can wait for the blu-ray with this one.
Juste la fin du monde (2016)
An uninteresting family with an uninteresting problem
This movie is a misstep in the young director's career. It might be worth seeing just to see Dolan fall flat on his face with this pretentious, boring, meandering, nearly unwatchable "drama". I say it in quotes because every single moment of intensity is fabricated, there is no true drama in the movie, it's all just excuses so the characters can yell. Feels like Dolan sometimes asked his actors to improvise and forgot to cut out all the bad parts of their improv. All these close-ups are nauseating and completely useless. I don't feel close to these characters and filming them an inch away from their faces won't help it. It's a disappointing mess, and I can't believe Dolan considers it to be his best film. I'm truly afraid for The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, which I was looking forward to. Hope he will straighten his path, because this is a truly bad movie and I don't understand how this got to a 7.2 (fake votes maybe?)
