The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
Go watch the original and skip this
I understand the heat or desire to play with leatherface. To have "fun" with the character. Before this movie was made there have been a few dozens of filmmakers wanting to do so. But if you remember the subject material for the original, it's pretty far from "fun" and that's the whole idea - why 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a classic.
But with the subject material it would have been easy to make something new that adds to that material, that stands the test of time and continues to intrigue horror movies lovers wolrdwide for years on end. The other - more obvious option is to make just another slasher film adding sex and shown violence (which the original did not have since it relied largely on viewers own imagination) to charm the majorities. That brings the dough in.
While I'm certain there are many others who are in heat to get to just shallowly play around with Leatherface, I would like to believe there is someone out there who will give this character and the storyline the treatment it deserves.
Skip this one unless you really are after pointless violence and mainstream "horror" and do yourself a favour and watch the original. Again and again !
The Magic of Belle Isle (2012)
Magic of Believing
I believed every word said - out loud or otherwise - in this movie.
For me, films like this come around about once or twice in a decade. I am already a bit anxious of how many times I will watch this during the rest of my life-time. I think the great personal experience was both the film being so well made and where I am at this precise moment in time. Great art touches an individual deeply and I shall not try to put this fine piece of great art into words. I would be a bit amazed of a person who does not get anything out of this one. Recommended for every living Soul. I would not recommend checking out the trailers (although I admit I have not watched them myself) but give this piece of captured time a chance and under 2 hours of your (and preferably with someone you love) life - you will spot the feeling of this one right on.
Amazing. Amen.
The Island (2005)
Good potential lost into mainstream madness
Nice idea. Insert modern filmmaking with a big budget here. Potential great story line more or less completely lost into over exaggerated action scenes, neat shots and effects. In first major city chase scene after halfway through the film this piece had lost all the credibility it might have had and if you blink you miss the little sparks of potential rarely here and there on the last half. Lots of single fine moments are drowned and suffocated by immature vision; I would imagine a lot of disappointment from people who developed the original ideas, then again maybe they were "borrowed" for this one. Good clean entertainment can actually be quite sad with this amount of echos from emptiness.
Powder (1995)
Simple world-saving thought wrapped in a one movie
I'm 29 year old guy with pretty hard feelings and this excellent movie has just made me cry. In my opinion Powder is all about one simple idea, a beautiful thought about saving the world by just being human. Anyone can decide for themselves would that ever work, but Powder offers 1 hour and 47 minutes of wondering. Sean Patrick Flanery is pretty much at his best in the leading role as Powder, and even terrible acting of other cast won't drop my vote below 10. Maybe Lance Henriksen is giving something as the town sheriff, but the others are just awful. I was real careful for not giving any spoilers here, and you can probably read more about the movie anywhere in the internet, but I personally recommend Powder for everyone who thinks, feels and loves. Now I go dry my eyes :')
Gin gwai (2002)
Horrificly horrifying movie experience
Wow. This movie completely caught me off-guard. It had been lying on my shelf for months, some friend gave it to me and since I don't usually watch much films made outside U.S. I hadn't really given much thought for it. When I finally got around watching it, man was I scared...
I'm not going into plot, you can probably read more from other comments and from the web but the effect this movie had on me - I didn't sleep last night. The Mood. I can't even remember when was the last time (or how old I was) when I wanted to close my eyes and not watch the screen. The Eye did that. This movie is SCARY and CREEPY. Lee Sin-Je does amazingly talented acting portraying the role of Mun, blind girl who has got her sight back. And now with her new vision, she starts seeing things... Let me warn you, the first scene when she sees something she shouldn't - you might just wet your pants. I was scared s***less every time she was seeing something, and I'm not that easy to scare. The Eye has much of the same with 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' but goes way beyond, simply with the mood. In this movie - at least for me - everything fell for place. Directing, shooting, editing, lighting, soundtrack & sound effects (really check these out!) - just simply amazing - Hollywood pay attention !
I guess one of the reasons this experience was so eerie was that the spoken language was Chinese, so I understood what was going on because of the subtitles, but the mumblings and other horrible voices were 'not familiar' to me, it made the movie even more scary. I know this review is a bit weird, but it's written by a guy who's still messed up from yesterday by The Eye. I'm checking the closets, looking over my shoulder. I'm still scared as hell.
If you ever have a chance - check out The Eye. Turn off the lights, put a little more volume on your speakers than usual - and prepare to be SCARED. 10+ !
That Old Feeling (1997)
One of the few movies which manage to set up an excellent mood..
This movie just saved my day - I know this is not a movie for everyone, but I fell in love with in the first minutes. This movie has the certain "something", which I find rare in movies these days - you can clearly see that everyone has had great fun doing this. Bette Midler and Dennis Farina pull out the best roles, and the casting is awesome overall. I might just be naive, but this film kept surprising me all the time, and I can't recall the last time any movie has gone by so fast. There is not great depths in the plot, it's just plain old 'feel good have fun' hour and a half !
Worked for me, went straight into my top ten !
