Generation Um... (2012)
OK, you're edgy; OK you're depraved
I must be careful not to put more thought into this review than the filmmaker put into this movie.
OK, thank you for sharing your emptiness with me. Let me share some with you:
As if nothing of substance appeared in this film, we were treated to a self-serving barrage of bonus nothingness at the end. (Yes, I stuck around for the whole thing.)
Self-important indie film checklist:
film within a film
no danger of plot
no danger of character development
edgy filtered camera angles and shots
forced naturalness
confused mommy daddy babbling
actors who needed a film on their resumé "acting"
requisite character confusion. Likable? Pitiable?
Check 'em all.
The Klansman (1974)
What's the word I'm looking for?
Oh yeah-bad. Marvin and Burton couldn't save this woeful mish mosh of one-dimensional cinematic tripe. Isn't drama supposed to be built upon character shift? Someone's stance changes based on a key incident resulting in conflict/decision/resolution? Not this movie. At the end everyone is just like they were at the beginning, and they remain static and caricatured throughout. That's $5 mil the industry's not getting back.
Danger Zone (1951)
Forgotten Noir for a reason
This film was so bad it was good. Fireign Theater must have drawn upon Danger Zone when they concocted Nick Danger. The hilariously corny metaphors (e.g., "...about as interesting as Mother's Day at an orphanage..."), the sudden right turns in the plot, characters stiffly showing up out of nowhere, the wise cracking, police taunting leading man. Oh, this is indeed a tarnished gem. And the names. Spadely (shades of Sam Spade) and the rummy bloodhound human mascot, Shicker. (Shicker, of course, is Yiddish for drunkard.) The flatness of the scenes reminded me of the early Superman TV series. Let's all stand around and deliver our lines one at a time. OK, I said my line. Now you say yours. Everybody get a turn? Good. Next scene. It takes about a half hour to solve the mystery, so they introduce a brand new plot with some of the same characters. Oy, what a mess.
