The Babadook (2014)

This is a movie about humans, not monsters.

The acting is simply fantastic. The movie solely evolves around the relationship between the mother and the son and they spend most of their time in the house. With other actors, it could have been a disaster. In that case, it was brilliant.

The descent into madness is illustrated in a poignant way. It is dark, sad and oppressing, primarily demonstrated through the dull colours, the succession of scenes where the characters sleep or talk about sleeping, the insertion of television footage and the amount of time they spend wandering in the living room in pyjamas. All supernatural elements put aside, it was a relevant and heart-breaking rendition of mourning, mental disease and depression. This is a movie about humans, not monsters.

The Babadook is a vibrant homage to early cinema (such as George Mélies) and, most specifically, the aesthetic of German expressionism. He is probably the best new villain to have hit the screens in a long time! You see just enough of him to have a good idea of what he looks like, but never enough to completely unfold the mystery.

The only downside, in my opinion, is the unnecessary use of possession movies tropes towards the end- convulsions, shaking furniture, etc. It all felt a little over the top, and even a desecration of its slow-paced, very original approach to the horror genre.

I was really looking forward to watching this. I recently got a lot into documentaries, and I felt as if this one had something fascinating and unusual.

This was filmed with what we call a great "economie de moyens" : it is denuded of many, many effects that documentaries commonly overdue: breathtaking music, scenic shots, narration...Nothing here is meant to look better or worse then it is : everything is displayed in all its confusion, ugliness and nonsense. The directors worked hard to come out with a very objective movie. Although you understand that they are on Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley's "side", they do not try to moderate the other "side"'s pain and loss. If anything or anybody looks suspicious or even grotesque at some point of the movie, it is not because it was caused by the film makers :it just happened that way.

By reading reviews and comments over this movie, I realize that a lot of people unfortunately pick one side and speak badly about the other, as if there was good and evil in a debate like this one. Things are not that simple. It is absolutely understandable that after the murder of your children, you feel the desperate need to find someone to blame it on : the parents are not monsters for believing in the guilt of these three teenagers. And please, please try to see further than the end of your nose : most of the people that have interest in witchcraft do not practice it. A lot of murderers do not wear black and do not listen to metal music. A lot of non-murderers read Stephen King novels and wear Dimmu Borgir t-shirts.

This is an intelligent movie that deserves to be watched intelligently and respectfully.

Devil (2010)

Film d'horreur correct, mais non marquant.

J'ai été agréablement surprise par ce film, envers lequel je n'avais aucune attente. En tant que thriller, Devil fait son travail et le suspense est maintenu selon les moyens convenus (musique angoissante, quelques sauts bien placés, etc.) Il y avait aussi certaines prises de vue fort efficaces, par exemple l'introduction, avec la ville et ses grattes-ciels vus à l'envers, ce qui suffit à mettre le spectateur mal à l'aise. Le double jeu de caméra, entre celui professionnel de l'équipe du film et celui statique de la caméra de surveillance, ajoutait à l'ensemble un réalisme parfois saisissant.

L'histoire se maintient; or, certains détails non résolus dérangent : pourquoi le camion sur lequel se trouve la personne suicidée a été déplacé? Quel est le véritable lien entre ce suicide et l'action principale du film? Que foutait un raton-laveur au sous-sol? Certaines explications sont aussi trop simples pour qu'on les avale. La fiancée de Tony, par exemple, n'avait réellement aucune motivation assez forte pour justifier son arrivée soudaine dans le building. Et comment se fait-il que le technicien Dwight n'est pas mis au courant de l'arrivée des pompiers et persiste à vouloir réparer l'ascenseur? Quant aux thèmes, ils sont manichéens, avec une pensée au sujet du pardon qui fait très Shyamalan. C'est d'ailleurs sans doute sa meilleure contribution (je dis contribution car il est coscénariste, non réalisateur) depuis "Le sixième sens" : j'ai été soulagée de ne pas retrouver tous ces "tics" shyamalaéens qui me font grincer des dents. Quant au jeu, il est maintenu mais pas renversant. Cela dit, le casting est bon, et les acteurs donnent l'impression d'avoir été bien dirigés. Le personnage de Ramirez, par contre, demeure superficiel, et le comédien qui le campe a perpétuellement l'air d'un bébé surpris, ce qui rendait la moindre de ses apparitions comiques pour mon copain et moi. La narration en voix-off en disait trop aussi : tout est raconté, et il n'y a pas matière à interprétation.

Au passage, pour une Québécoise, c'est toujours génial de voir Caroline Dhavernas au cinéma américain, même dans un rôle mineur :)

En résumé, un film d'horreur correct, au suspense réussi et au jeu habile. Caméra et musique qui rendent bien l'effet claustrophobique sans le surjouer. Première moitié plus réussie que la deuxième. Fin assez prévisible. Malgré tout, un excellent divertissement pour un vendredi soir pluvieux.
